Mental illness live chat at noon Monday with Anna Griffin: How do ...

How do we reduce the chances of another Virginia Tech, Aurora or Newtown? Are we doing enough to help young people, particularly young men, control their anger and manage their own mental health care?

Those are the questions posed by The Oregonian's Anna Griffin in her report on mental illness among teens and young adults. At noon Monday, Griffin will host a live chat to explore those questions and yours about mental health care.

Millions of children don't receive the mental health support they need, Griffin writes. Those with potentially severe mental illnesses, the type that can morph into something deadly as adolescence evolves into young adulthood, aren't diagnosed early enough. They're not getting the compassionate, thorough care that will help them make smart decisions once they reach the age of consent.

What can parents do to help their children? What roles can and should schools, physicians and emergency responders play? And what happens if we as a community can't figure this out?

Please bring your questions, concerns and insights to our live chat here at noon Monday.
