Monday marked one month since 26 people, including 20 children, were shot and killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut.
Portland Mayor Michael Brennan joined 800 other mayors from across the country to urge federal and state governments to implement new gun control measures, which include requiring criminal background checks on all gun sales; banning military-style weapons and high capacity magazines; and make gun trafficking a federal crime.
Brennan was quick to point out the effort is far from an effort to ban guns.
"Nobody is standing up here today tipping the scales one way or the other," Brennan said.
Brennan issued the statement while flanked by supporters such as Portland's police chief and school superintendent.
"Hopefully as we move forward the proposals we put on the table today, people will see these as reasonable, sensible and we'll be able to move forward with them," Brennan said.
Many of the Mayors Against Illegal Guns held press conferences Monday to talk about the issue.
Brennan said people have the right to have guns for protection, but also have a right to ensure the safety of their families.
Local gun activists said there is room for compromise on the issue.
"I think everybody is very concerned about safety in our society," said Jeff Weinstein, president of the Maine Gun Owners Association.
