Skin, soft tissue infections succumb to blue light

Jan. 28, 2013 ? Blue light can selectively eradicate Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections of the skin and soft tissues, while preserving the outermost layer of skin, according to a proof-of-principle study led by Michael R. Hamblin of the Massachusetts General Hospital, and the Harvard Medical School, Boston.

The research is published online ahead of print in the journal Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy.

"Blue light is a potential non-toxic, non-antibiotic approach for treating skin and soft tissue infections, especially those caused by antibiotic resistant pathogens," says Hamblin.

In the study, animal models were infected with P. aeruginosa. All of the animals in the group treated with blue light survived, while in the control, 82 percent (9 out of 11) of the animals died.

Skin and soft tissue infections are the second most common bacterial infections encountered in clinical practice, and represent the most common infection presentation -- more than 3 percent -- in patients visiting emergency departments, says Hamblin. The prevalence of skin and soft tissue infections among hospitalized patients is 10 percent, with approximately 14.2 million ambulatory care visits every year and an annual associated medical cost of almost $24 billion (equivalent to $76 for every American), says Hamblin.

Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections has been significantly complicated by the explosion of antibiotic resistance, which may bring an end to what medical scientists refer to as the antibiotic era, says Hamblin. "Microbes replicate very rapidly, and a mutation that helps a microbe survive in the presence of an antibiotic drug will quickly predominate throughout the microbial population. Recently, a dangerous new enzyme, NDM-1, that makes some bacteria resistant to almost all antibiotics available has been found in the United States. Many physicians are concerned that several infections soon may be untreatable."

Besides harming public health, antibiotic resistance boosts health care costs. "Treating resistant skin and soft tissue infections often requires the use of more expensive, or more toxic drugs, and can result in longer hospital stays for infected patients," says Hamblin.

Outstanding Faculty Award Winner Announced ? NOVA Fortnightly ...

Submitted

Robert Bausch of Northern Virginia Community College has received the 2013 Outstanding Faculty Award, administered by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia and sponsored by Dominion.

Bausch is one of 12 faculty recipients from Virginia?s public and private colleges and universities who received the award, the highest honor bestowed upon faculty in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The award recognizes excellence in teaching, research, knowledge integration, and public service.

Bausch has taught English composition, literature and creative writing for 38 years at NOVA?s Woodbridge Campus. Prior to teaching, he began his college education at Northern Virginia Community College as a student on the Annandale Campus in 1970 before transferring to George Mason University.

Believing in the empowerment of education, his approach to teaching transforms a classroom into a place of discovery where students discuss and practice both writing and speaking, while fostering ownership of their own lives. In doing so, he strives to help his students shape their future and find a path to their goals. In addition to teaching, Bausch has single-handedly run the Woodbridge Reading Series, which brings successful American writers to teach and discuss their work to his students and the community.

?On behalf of the College, we would like to express our congratulations to Professor Bausch for being selected as a recipient of this prestigious award,? said NOVA President Dr. Robert G. Templin Jr. ?According to Bob, he would not have a college degree ? in fact he would not have had the life he has, or done the work he?s done ? if not for NOVA. His strong commitment to teaching, while working on his own professional literary career, is evident through the many students he?s inspired, some of whom have gone on to become successful writers themselves.?

As a creative writer, Bausch has enjoyed professional success through the publication of nine novels and a collection of short stories. His professional works include: ?On the Way Home,? ?The Lives of Riley Chance,? ?Almighty Me,? ?The White Rooster and Other Stories,? ?Out of Season,? ?The Gypsy Man,? and ?A Hole in the Earth.? Many of these novels have garnered critical acclaim. He was awarded the John Dos Passos Medal for Literature, he was a Pulitzer Prize finalist, and his novel ?Almighty Me? served as the creative source for a feature length film.

?I enjoy teaching because I believe so whole heartedly in education, and in a student?s ability to find out what his or her passion is,? Bausch said. ?I want to do the same for my students that NOVA and my teachers in the early seventies did for me: They helped me discover what I needed to do in life that would be rewarding and fulfilling. I?ve taught at a lot of places, but I keep coming back to NOVA because of what it means to me.?

Bausch received a bachelors and two masters degrees, including a master of fine arts from George Mason University. He has lived in Stafford County for two decades.

Along with 11 other recipients, Bausch will be recognized during a Feb. 12 ceremony at the Jefferson Hotel in Richmond. He now joins the company of 10 other NOVA colleagues who have been past recipients of the Virginia Outstanding Faculty Award.

Lomography Horizon Kompakt

The Lomography Horizon Kompakt ($299 direct) is likely to be lumped into the category of toy cameras due to Lomo's brand identity, but its 28mm f/8 fixed lens is capable of producing some seriously sharp images?a departure from the low-fi optics found in the Sprocket Rocket and Diana F+. The Russian-made camera is the less expensive of two models available, the other being the Horizon Perfekt?which is priced at a steeper $450. The Kompakt is an easier sell if you're interested in shooting with a panoramic camera, want something that's going to deliver sharp images, but aren't quite ready to make the plunge to buy the Perfekt or an even more expensive model like a Widelux or Hasselblad XPan.

The aspect ratio of the images is roughly 5:2, nearly twice as wide as a standard 35mm film frame. Because of this, you'll get fewer pictures per roll?about 22 for a 36-exposure roll and 14 with a 24-exposure roll. If you intend to scan film for sharing on the web you'll likely be limited to using a flatbed, as the film holders that are supplied with dedicated 35mm film scanners generally have posts at every standard frame break, a design that is intended to help keep film flat for sharper scans.

The camera has a large optical viewfinder that will give you an idea of your approximate frame. When taking a picture the lens actually swings from one side to another?the film plane is curved behind it to match the swing pattern, not flat as it is in other cameras. Loading the camera can be a bit tricky, as you need to make sure film is under certain rollers and over others?but the manual does a good job of explaining it, and there's a diagram printed on the inside of the camera in case you're questioning your skills when reloading in the field. Everything is done mechanically so there are no batteries required. Despite being billed as the Kompakt, it's a large, odd-looking beast?it's actually about the same size as a typical D-SLR body, although not as deep. ?

There are only two shutter speed settings?the daytime setting gives you a 1/60-second exposure, while the night setting is a half-second?as the lens has to physically move to take the shot, the actual exposure time is more like 1/12 of a second for the day mode and 5 seconds for the night. I was able to get sharp handheld shots without a problem with the shorter shutter speed?I just made sure to steady myself and choose mostly stationary subjects. If you want to get creative with the camera, Lomo's site has a few examples of folks taking shots where most subjects are static, but one is moving?which can create an interesting visual effect.

The night mode can be a bit more challenging, I got one shot that I liked using that setting without a tripod, but there is some evidence of camera shake in part of the frame. I didn't use a light meter with the camera, but I was able to get good exposures even with the limited shutter speed options thanks to the wide exposure latitude of 400 speed color negative film. If you feel that you're going to want more control out of a panoramic camera, you should consider laying out the extra money for the Perfekt?its lens has a variable aperture from f/2.8 to f/16 and there are several shutter speeds available, varying from 1/2-second to 1/500-second.

I was impressed with just how much detail the Horizon Kompakt was capable of capturing. I shot a variety of images ranging from rural landscapes to some street scenes in New York City. When I held the camera perfectly straight horizon lines were also quite straight?impressive for such a wide field of view?but tilting it a bit will cause straight lines to curve.

The Lomography Horizon Kompakt is a fun camera. Its swing lens design produces panoramic photos, and its 28mm f/8 lens is quite sharp. Sure, a lot of modern digital cameras?and even smartphones like the iPhone 5?have a panoramic photo mode, but for folks of a certain mindset there's no substitute for good old fashioned film. If the asking price is too much you can step down to the Sprocket Rocket, although the images it produces are nowhere near as sharp. And if you're really serious about shooting wide you may want to consider spending the extra money on the Perfekt, but for daylight use with negative film I didn't feel too restricted by the Kompakt's fixed aperture or limited shutter speed selection.

China, Russia, U.S. raise Mediterranean naval focus

PORT SAID, Egypt (Reuters) - Egypt has seen no shortage of empires come and go, from its own ancient civilizations to those of Greece, Rome, Britain and France. Now, it is among the outposts of the latest Mediterranean power: China.

Situated at the northern end of the Suez Canal, the Port Said Container Terminal is one of the busiest in the region, vital for shipments not only to Egypt but also much of Europe and the Middle East.

Like several other key ports in the region - including Piraeus in Greece and Naples in Italy - it is now partially owned by China. The state-owned Cosco Pacific holds 20 percent the terminal, helping make it one of the dominant - if not the dominant - Mediterranean port operators.

Cosco stresses that it is a purely commercial venture and many analysts agree. But few doubt that Beijing has made a wider geopolitical decision to become much more involved in the region.

For the last two years, the People's Liberation Army Navy has sent one or more warships through the Suez Canal to visit southern European ports, the furthest its fleet has ever operated from home.

But China is not the only great power now increasing its involvement in the area. With Russia sending warships to positions off Syria and the United States signaling it too intends to take the region more seriously, the Mediterranean is clearly no longer seen as the strategic backwater many believed it had become.

"The assumption that the Mediterranean would become a purely Western sphere of influence appears to have been premature," says Nikolas Gvosdev, professor of national security studies at the United States Naval War College in Rhode Island.

"The Chinese are showing their flag in an area far from their traditional area of operations in part to show that they are a global power. The renewed Russian deployments are part intended as a sign that Moscow has not gone away."

Other strategic shifts are also taking place in the region.

The "Arab Spring" has unleashed a period of unrest and instability across North Africa and beyond while the euro zone crisis has left troubled southern European states struggling with debt and searching for ready investment.

Meanwhile, the gas platforms beginning to dot the disputed waters of the eastern Mediterranean have unleashed a scramble for resources that has further exacerbated pre-existing tensions between Cyprus, Turkey and Israel.

The U.S. had hoped it could pull back from the area, helping transfer military resources to the Pacific and South China Sea as part of a pivot to Asia aimed heavily at containing a rising China. But last year's Libya conflict provided stark warning that European states had distinctly limited capacity, and as the financial crisis bites defense budgets have been further cut.

"I don't see a conflict," says Gvosdev at the Naval War College. "But... (it) does make it more difficult to do an Asia pivot on the cheap."

U.S. DESTROYERS TO SPAIN

In 2011 Admiral Gary Roughead - at the time Chief of Naval Operations and the professional head of the U.S. Navy - told senior officers the U.S. needed to return to the Mediterranean.

In the years since the end of the Cold War and Balkan conflicts that followed, the U.S. had quietly stopped maintaining a permanent aircraft carrier there as it focused on Iraq and Afghanistan and confrontation with Iran.

Limited resources mean putting a permanent carrier back in the region is all but impossible. But other ships now look set to take up a much more permanent presence.

Last year, the Pentagon announced it was deploying four state-of-the-art missile destroyers to the Spanish port of Rota, in part to counter any missile threat to Europe from Iran or elsewhere in the Middle East.

In November, as Israeli forces pounded Gaza in their brief air campaign against Hamas, several U.S. assault ships and escorts entered the eastern Mediterranean in what was seen as a precursor to any evacuation of U.S. citizens. It was the sort of deployment military officials say will likely become more common in the years to come.

Nor, current and former officials say, does Washington have any intention of letting gas tensions between its various Eastern Mediterranean allies turn into open conflict.

"The Maghreb and Levant are clearly going to be unstable for some time," Roughead, now retired and a senior visiting fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, told Reuters. "The eastern Mediterranean is also worrying. There's no doubt it's going to require more attention."

SYRIA WORRIES DRIVE RUSSIAN PRESENCE

It was the positioning of a U.S. carrier off Syria in November 2011 that appeared to prompt one of the largest Russian naval moves in recent years. As Bashar al-Assad's crackdown on rebels and protesters became ever bloodier, Washington had quietly moved it and its battle group towards Syria.

In what may or may not have been a direct response, Moscow sent its only aircraft carrier - the Soviet era Admiral Kuznetzov - into the same area to visit its naval base at Tartus. In Moscow, Russian officials gave distinctly conflicting signals to local and international media, some denying any link to the Syrian conflict while others saying it was a deliberate warning to the West to back off.

On January 17, Russian news agencies again reported two warships were heading to Syria for exercises and to deliver munitions to Tartus, although it was not immediately clear whether that meant the undisclosed weaponry was headed for Assad's forces or Russia's own stockpiles there.

The Russian naval base at Tartus remains Moscow's only Mediterranean port. Retaining access to it is seen as a major factor in Russia's refusal to abandon Assad.

When a Chinese destroyer and frigate sailed through Suez into the Mediterranean in August last year, several analysts suggested they were aiming to join joint naval exercises being held between Moscow and Damascus.

But instead, they sailed up through the Bosporus to the Black Sea to visit Ukraine, Bulgaria and Romania.

CHINA'S "STRATEGIC AMBIVALENCE"

"The fact that it did not seize the opportunity to hold drills together with the Russians could confirm that Beijing is not warming to the prospect of a new Cold War and continues to prefer strategic ambivalence about polarization," Jonathan Holsag, research fellow at the Brussels Institute of Contemporary China Studies, wrote in Chinese state-owned newspaper the Global Times in August.

Some European and U.S. security analysts remain nervous over the Chinese expansion - particularly in Naples, where the Chinese-owned terminal directly overlooks NATO's main Mediterranean naval base. But in Greece, the Chinese investment remains relatively popular. With the purchase of new cranes and other equipment, Cosco has increased container traffic through its terminal by some 70 percent each of the three years of operation.

The vast majority of containers handled by the port are shipped on elsewhere in the world, turning Piraeus into a much more significant international hub.

"This investment has been very important for Greece," says Tassos Vamvakidis, deputy manager of the Cosco-run container terminal. "At a time of economic difficulty, it is very important."

One veteran British naval officer compared China's approaching the Mediterranean to that of Britain in the 18th and 19th centuries, when its commercial expansion was at least as important as its military.

Chinese officials might object to that comparison. But there seems little doubt they intend to stay - and that includes a high profile if occasional military presence.

"There are many good reasons for Beijing to show its flag," wrote Hoslag in "Global Times", a nationalist tabloid published by the Communist Party mouthpiece the "People's Daily. "It is better to make countries around the Mediterranean used to Chinese naval presence than to alarm them later on."

Get Rid of Tape Residue with Duct Tape

Get Rid of Tape Residue with Duct TapeMost tape leaves a residue when you remove it, and the cure is the same as the culprit. Redditor Odnetnin90 points out that you can get rid of the excess sticky stuff with a little duct tape:

I used duct tape to hang posters in my apartment and it left that sticky residue on my walls. Take the duct take and just stick it to the wall over the residue in order to remove it without tearing off any paint.

I tested this out by sticking some duct tape to a mirror and blow drying it for awhile to make the adhesive stickier, then letting it cool. When I pulled it off there was a residue. Using the other half of the same duct tape not stuck to the wall, I pressed it against the residue and pulled the tape off. With the exception of a tiny bit on the edge of the mirror, the tape removed the residue easily. Nothing wrong with a self-solving problem!

Big Data And SaaS Will Become Relevant For Small Businesses In 2013

datakeyEditor's note:?Chris Luo is VP of Marketing at FiveStars. Previously, he ran small business marketing at Facebook and acquisition marketing in Asia-Pacific for Google AdWords. Over the past few years, most of us who work at mid to large-sized companies have seen our productivity multiply by the successful integration of big data and SaaS. But small businesses have not reaped the same benefits. In 2013, this will change.

Sony (Finally) Moves Past Kooky Tablet Designs, Introduces The Svelte New Xperia Tablet Z

tablet-z1This latest Xperia tablet has been the stuff of rumors for a few days now -- a release from Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo first hinted that the so-called Tablet Z was in fact a real thing earlier this week -- but the time for rumors has passed. Now Sony Mobile Japan has officially lifted the veil, and (to my utter surprise) the Tablet Z is both real and rather striking.

Soap Dish: Alison Sweeney Celebrates 20 Years on Days Of Our Lives

It is Soap Dish time again and this week I am dishing all about Alison Sweeney celebrating 20-years as Sami Brady on Days of Our Lives. Can you believe she been on the hit NBC show for two decades? On January 5th Alison makred 20-years in Salem. She has taken the character of Sami Brady from traumatized troubled teen, to?conniving younger woman, to bad girl tuned good, to the woman you love to hate, to now the woman who still has a little sinister Sami in her but is also a loving caring mother. The transformation of the character has been quite the journey and it could not have been done if Sweeney had not been playing Sami. Alison made you love Sami even when you hated her actions you couldn’t help but still want to root for her. It takes a very talented person to pull that off. There are so many fabulous story lines that Sweeney and the character of Sami have had over the years I can’t even remember them all. However I do have a couple of my favorites I want to share. Of course there is the one where Sami catches John and Marlena having [...]

Norway's Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg is embraced by Executive Vice President in Statoil, Margrethe Oevrum, Saturday Jan. 19, 2013, after his visit at the drop-in center in Bergen for relatives of the Statoil-employees taken hostage in Algeria. In a bloody finale on Saturday, Algerian special forces stormed a natural gas complex in the Sahara desert to end a four-day standoff with Islamic extremists that left at least 19 hostages and 29 militants dead. (AP) ? An Algerian security official says de-mining squads searching for explosives found "numerous" bodies Sunday at a gas refinery where Islamic militants took dozens of foreign workers hostage.

The official said the bodies were difficult to identify and it was impossible to determine if they were foreign hostages or others. He spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation.

Algerian special forces stormed the natural gas complex in the Sahara desert on Saturday to end the standoff, and the government said all 32 militants were killed. Earlier Sunday, Algeria's chief government spokesman said he feared the toll of hostages ? which stood at 23 on Saturday ? would rise as the special forces teams finished their search.

Manti Te'o To ESPN: Lennay Kekua Hoax Not His Doing, Ronaiah Tuiasosopo Apologized

NEW YORK -- Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o insisted he had no role in the bizarre hoax involving his "dead" girlfriend and told ESPN on Friday night that he was duped by a person who has since apologized to him.

In an off-camera interview with ESPN, Te'o said Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, a 22-year-old acquaintance who lives in California, contacted him two days ago and confessed to the prank. Deadspin.com first exposed the scheme on Wednesday and indicated Tuiasosopo was involved in it.

"I wasn't faking it," ESPN quoted Te'o as saying during the 2 1-2 hour interview. "I wasn't part of this. When they hear the facts they'll know. They'll know there is no way I could be a part of this."

Te'o said he first met Tuiasosopo in person after the Southern California game in November. Te'o told ESPN that Tuiasosopo told him he was the cousin of Lennay Kekua, the woman who Te'o believed he had fallen for through Internet chats and long phone conversations.

"Two guys and a girl are responsible for the whole thing," Te'o told ESPN. "I don't know. According to Ronaiah, Ronaiah's one."

Te'o said he never met Kekua face-to-face and when he tried to speak with her via Skype and video phone calls, the picture was blocked.

He also told ESPN that he lied to his father about having met Kekua. To cover that up, he apparently lied to everyone else.

After he was told Kekua had died of leukemia in early September, Te'o said he misled the public about the nature of the "relationship" because he was uncomfortable saying he had never met her in person.

"That goes back to what I did with my dad. I knew that. I even knew that it was crazy that I was with somebody that I didn't meet," he said. "So I kind of tailored my stories to have people think that, yeah, he met her before she passed away."

Te'o's first interview since the story broke came at the end of a day that started with Notre Dame posting a podcast of athletic director Jack Swarbrick's radio show, during which he implored the Heisman Trophy runner-up to speak publicly about the episode. Already, it had turned the feel-good story line of the college football season into a dark and strange one.

Te'o took Notre Dame's advice, but this was no Lance Armstrong-with-Oprah Winfrey mea culpa.

ESPN conducted the interview with Te'o at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., where Te'o is preparing for the NFL draft and hopes to be among the first-round picks. The network produced only still photos of the interview, with reporter Jeremy Schaap sitting at large table with the linebacker. Schaap then provided details on "Sports Center" and a story was posted on ESPN.com.

Some wondered whether Te'o had been in on the fake girlfriend scheme in an odd attempt to gain positive publicity and attention. Schaap said Te'o firmly denied that. The nation's best defender also said the hoax affected his play in the BCS national championship, a 42-14 loss to Alabama in which he performed poorly.

Te'o told ESPN that he wasn't entirely sure he was the victim of a hoax until earlier this week, just two days ago, when Tuiasosopo apologized to him via Twitter. As Notre Dame officials said earlier, he did get a call from the person posing as Kekua on Dec. 6 - but it was to tell him she had not died at all, and to carry on their courtship.

Te'o was confused. He finally confided in his parents over Christmas break in his home state of Hawaii and told Notre Dame coaches what was going on Dec. 26.

"My relationship with Lennay wasn't a four-year relationship," Te'o said. "There were blocks and times and periods in which we would talk and then it would end," but he offered her a "shoulder to cry on" when she told him her father had died.

Te'o said he was told Kekua was in a coma following an April 28 car accident, but she awoke the following month. He never made an attempt to visit her in the hospital.

"It never really crossed my mind. I don't know. I was in school," he told ESPN.

Then came the day in September when his grandmother died and the woman known as Kekua reached out to him.

"I was angry. I didn't want to be bothered," he told ESPN. "We got in an argument. She was saying, you know, I'm trying to be here for you. I didn't want to be bothered. I wanted to be left alone. I just wanted to be by myself. Last thing she told me was `Just know I love you.'"

Te'o was told later that day Kekua had died.

ESPN did not play audio of the interview, relying instead on descriptions of Te'o and his statements from reporter Schaap. Audio clips were posted later. According to the reporter, Te'o was calm, seemed relieved to tell his side of the story and had no interest in going on camera.

Te'o told ESPN the relationship with Kekua dated to his freshman year at Notre Dame, the 2009-10 season, and they met via Facebook.

The nation's best defender also said the hoax affected his play in the BCS national championship, a 42-14 loss to Alabama in which he performed poorly.

Non-lethal chemical weapons used in Syria, Le Monde says

PARIS (Reuters) - Syrian forces used non-lethal chemical weapons against rebels in the town of Homs in late December, according to intelligence service sources cited by French daily Le Monde on Saturday.

The weapons were used in four rockets fired on December 23, according to unnamed sources in Western intelligence services cited by the newspaper. Le Monde suggested Western powers played down an isolated event in the hope it would not be repeated.

Le Monde quoted French Foreign Ministry spokesman Philippe Lalliot as having told it that the matter had been investigated but that the checks did not produce evidence.

A French diplomatic source contacted by Reuters said Lalliot's response to Le Monde remained the official line.

Le Monde said Western powers had previously warned that recourse to chemical weapons could force them into action in a deadly conflict where President Bashar al Assad has used troops to crush an uprising now nearly two years old

"We checked this out, closely, and notably the videos that were circulating. We cannot say that combat gas or any lethal chemical products were deployed," Le Monde quoted Lalliot as having told it of the chemical weapons reports.

The diplomatic source contacted by Reuters said this was and remained the case.

The United Nations says 60,000 have been killed in the 22-month-old conflict.

Zoologger: The first solar-powered vertebrate

Zoologger is our weekly column highlighting extraordinary animals ? and occasionally other organisms ? from around the world

Species: Ambystoma maculatum
Habitat: Throughout the eastern USA and parts of southern Canada, leaving other salamanders green with envy

When you think about it, animals are weird. They ignore the abundant source of energy above their heads ? the sun ? and choose instead to invest vast amounts of energy in cumbersome equipment for eating and digesting food. Why don't they do what plants do, and get their energy straight from sunlight?

The short answer is that many do. Corals are animals but have algae living in them that use sunlight to make sugar. Many other animals, from sponges to sea slugsMovie Camera, pull the same trick. One species of hornet can convert sunlight into electricity. There are also suggestions that aphids can harness sunlight, although most biologists are unconvinced.

But all these creatures are only distantly related to us. No backboned animal has been found that can harness the sun ? until now. It has long been suspected, and now there is hard evidence: the spotted salamander is solar-powered.

Plants make food using photosynthesis, absorbing light to power a chemical reaction that converts carbon dioxide and water into glucose and releases oxygen. Corals profit from this reaction by housing photosynthetic algae inside their shells.

Long-term partners

Spotted salamanders, too, are in a long-term relationship with photosynthetic algae. In 1888, biologist Henry Orr reported that their eggs often contain single-celled green algae called Oophila amblystomatis. The salamanders lay the eggs in pools of water, and the algae colonise them within hours.

By the 1940s, biologists strongly suspected it was a symbiotic relationship, beneficial to both the salamander embryos and the algae. The embryos release waste material, which the algae feed on. In turn the algae photosynthesise and release oxygen, which the embryos take in. Embryos that have more algae are more likely to survive and develop faster than embryos with few or none.

Then in 2011 the story gained an additional twist. A close examination of the eggs revealed that some of the algae were living within the embryos themselves, and in some cases were actually inside embryonic cells. That suggested the embryos weren't just taking oxygen from the algae: they might be taking glucose too. In other words, the algae were acting as internal power stations, generating fuel for the salamanders.

To find out if that was happening, Erin Graham of Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and colleagues incubated salamander eggs in water containing radioactive carbon-14. Algae take up the isotope in the form of carbon dioxide, producing radioactive glucose.

Graham found that the embryos became mildly radioactive ? unless kept in the dark. That showed that the embryos could only take in the carbon-14 via photosynthesis in the algae.

Big help

The algae do not seem to be essential to the embryos, but they are very helpful: embryos deprived of algae struggle. "Their survival rate is much lower and their growth is slowed," says Graham.

It's less clear how well the algae get on without the embryos. In the lab, they transform into dormant cysts. The salamander eggs are only around in spring, suggesting that in the wild, the algae spend the rest of the year as cysts. The ponds they live in dry up in summer, so the algae may sit out the rest of the year in the sediment.

Now that one vertebrate has been shown to use photosynthesis, Graham says there could well be others. "Anything that lays eggs in water would be a good candidate," she says, as algae would have easy access to the eggs. So other amphibians, and fish, could be doing it. It's much less likely that a mammal or bird could photosynthesise, as their developing young are sealed off from the outside world.

Schools: Natick football coaches receive MIAA penalty

A meeting with the MIAA Board of Directors on Wednesday to review the incident regarding the use of an unauthorized football by Natick in its playoff game with Plymouth South yielded consequences for the Redhawks coaching staff.

The MIAA ruled that for using the ball the entire Natick coaching staff, led by head coach Mark Mortarelli, will be required to attend three courses offered by the National Federation and one course offered by the MIAA on sportsmanship.

"It is regrettable that this incident occurred, and unfortunate that so many of the things that could have prevented it from happening and becoming the story that it is didn't happen," said Natick athletic director Tim Collins in a statement.

During the game, Natick asked and received permission from a game official to use a Wilson GTS ball, despite the fact that the MIAA rules state the only ball authorized for use was a ball made by Spalding.

Permission was granted on the basis of weather, but Plymouth South was not informed, and used the ball regulated for playoff use. But despite receiving permission, the Board of Directors found that even inquiring about the use of a different ball constituted unsportsmanlike conduct.

"Natick's Football Staff did ask for and receive permission on that snowy, stormy playoff football night to use (not an illegal football) but a non-corporate sponsored football," continued the statement by Collins. "The MIAA assigned officiating crew made a game time decision and Natick's Football Team was authorized to use the brand of football it had used all season. The Natick Coaching Staff acted on good faith that the MIAA Officiating Crew had the authority to make the decision they made that night."

Despite that, Collins said the coaching staff would cooperate with the penalty and that the coaches would attend all required sportsmanship courses.

"Natick High School respects the MIAA's decision and the efforts of the MIAA Football Committee and the Executive Board," said Collins. "Although we have not received in writing the MIAA's findings from yesterday's (Wednesday) Executive Board Meeting, Natick HS is ready to move forward and will follow the MIAA directives in regard to the Football Staff completing a Coaches' Education Course."

You Have the Time to Make a Connection ? Business Management ...

Leaders often lament to me about how busy they are. One of the things many say doesn?t get done is taking the time to build relationships with their team members.

I know you are busy.

I know you have a lot on your plate. But finding connections and building relationships with your team members pays dividends in many ways, including greater productivity, less turnover, higher morale, more trust and greater speed of implementation.

If I could give you ways to work on these relationships and gain these benefits and prove it wouldn?t take too much time, would you be interested?

If so, read on.

Your goal as a leader isn?t to make friends; it is to build strong working relationships. Talking about the work and the weather isn?t enough. If you really want to engage with people, you have to find connections and make it a priority. Doing this doesn?t have to take much time.

Find their passions. This may not be hard at all. What pictures are in their office? What do you hear them talking to others about? Everyone likes to talk about what they are passionate about?whether it is their kids, their alma mater, fishing or football. Find what that is, and be genuinely interested in their passion. You might be surprised how quickly this will build a connection and what you learn in the process.

Find a commonality. What do you share? Are you both a twin, did you both play trumpet in the high school band, or both love the Grand Canyon? When you find the pieces of a connection, you begin to crystallize it and provide the seeds for a relationship to grow.

Be happy. People want to be around happy people. You do, don?t you? Smile and share a positive outlook on things. While this is an attractive quality in anyone, as a leader it is even more important, because your attitude and outlook are extremely contagious. Make sure what you are spreading is the attitude and perspective that you want to grow.

Say thank you. You learned it as a kid?but are you still doing it (enough)? Show your appreciation to your team for the little stuff as well as the big stuff. Let them know you notice. Acknowledge their efforts and results.

Be present. The biggest gift we can give anyone is our time?maybe that is why it?s called the present. This doesn?t mean you need to spend an hour with someone; it just means that when you are with them, don?t be somewhere else! Listen; quiet your internal dialogue. Make eye contact. Acknowledge people with your full attention. It happens so rarely that when we do it, it makes a big and lasting impression.

Arrive with no agenda. Don?t just show up in someone?s area when you have a question or a challenge, and mask it with an opening conversation about a non-work item. It is transparent and not nearly as meaningful as simply doing some of the other ideas on this list. Stop by to stop by. Ask more questions, shut up and listen. If you have something specific to discuss, start there and move to other items afterwards, rather than the other way around (especially early in your relationship-building process with that person).

Be helpful. Find out what people are concerned by and need, and then offer your help. I?m not talking micro-managing, I?m talking about help. This is simple and very powerful. Do it.

Make it your goal to make their day. What if you made this one of your goals each day? How would it change your behavior? How would it impact the behavior, and productivity of others? How would it begin to change your organizational culture? Try this?it won?t take long for you to find significant results.

All of these things will work, and none of them take much of your time. Make it your goal to do more of these things with more people more often. It might be in the three minutes before a meeting starts, in the coffee room, or when you walk by their workspace. Doing these things will give you great results, will endear you to your team and will make your work more fun too.

Live cricket score Kochi ODI: India pip England to level series 1-1

India finally found their winning touch as they relied on a brilliant all-round display to thrash England by an emphatic 127 runs in the second cricket one-dayer here at Nehru Stadium in Kochi on Tuesday.

India vs England: Live Cricket Score

????
India first posted a competitive 285, riding on captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni's 72 and Ravindra Jadeja's 61, before the bowlers skittled out the visitors for a paltry 158 in just 36 overs to level the five-match series 1-1.
???
It was a convincing and morale-boosting victory for the Indians who have struggled of late even in home conditions, losing the ODI series to arch-rivals Pakistan and the Test series against England.
????
The hosts did well in all departments of the game, though the batting of the top order continued to be a concern with Gautam Gambhir (8) and Ajinkya Rahane (4) failing to deliver while the form of Virat Kohli remained patchy though he scored 37 today.
???
It was Dhoni's 66-ball 72 and Jadeja's blistering unbeaten knock of 61 in just 37 balls which provided the late flourish to the Indian innings. Suresh Raina (55) and Yuvraj Singh (32), who was distinctly unlucky to be given LBW, were the other notable contributors.
????
With the Nehru Stadium providing ample assistance to the bowlers in the second half, the Indians exploited the conditions to the hilt to bundle out the visitors with Kevin Pietersen being the top-scorer with a 58-ball 42.
????
Bhuvneshwar Kumar (3/29), R Ashwin (3/39) and Jadeja (2/12) were the pick of the Indian bowlers to give the hosts a resounding victory in front of a capacity crowd.
????
The two teams will now travel to Ranchi for the third one-dayer to be played on January 19.
?

India's top-order struggled once again but skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (72) continued his rich vein of form to steer the hosts to a challenging 285 for six against England in the second one-dayer here at Nehru Stadium in Kochi on Tuesday.
??? ?
Dhoni blasted a 66-ball 72 laced with seven fours and two sixes, to take his team past the 250-run mark after they were reduced to 119-4 in 26.2 overs.
??? ?
Dhoni featured in two crucial partnerships --- first adding 55 runs with Suresh Raina and then 96 runs with Ravindra Jadeja for the fifth and sixth wickets respectively.
??? ?
Middle-order batsman Raina also cracked a well-paced half-century off 78 balls, studded with two sixes and a couple of fours, to initially steady the innings along with Dhoni having come into bat at No 5.
??? ?
However, it was in the last 10 overs which gave the hosts the impetus as Dhoni and allrounder Ravindra Jadeja, amassed 108 runs, to put the team in a comfortable position after they decided to bat first.
??? ?
Steven Finn was the top wickettaker for England as he took two wickets for 51 runs, while James Tredwell bowled really well, taking one wicket for 48 runs.
??? ?
Jade Dernbach and Chris Woakes were expensive but snapped two and one wicket to contribute to the team.
?? ?
Earlier, India had a tottering start as they were reduced to 18 for two by the English pace duo of Finn and Dernbach.
??? ?
Gautam Gambhir (8) and Ajinkya Rahane (4) paid the price for their poor footwork as both were cleaned bowled by Dernbach and Finn respectively.
??? ?
While, Gambhir failed to defend an incoming delivery from Finn, Rahane tried to play too away from the body, leaving a huge gap which was breached by the inswinger from Dernbach.
??? ?
Virat Kohli and Yuvraj Singh then tried to steady the ship and added 53 runs off 65 balls for the third wicket.

However, the left-handed batsman was adjudged leg-before wicket by umpire Steve Davis despite the fact that Tredwell's delivery had kissed Yuvraj's glove while he attempted a sweep shot. Yuvraj hit five fours in his 37-ball innings.
??? ?
Raina then joined Kohli and the duo forged another 48-run stand for the fifth wicket and helped India cross the 100-run mark. But Kohli then threw his wicket in pursuit of an ambitious shot.
??? ?
Soon it was left to Raina and Dhoni once again to stem the rot and the duo did not disappoint, taking the hosts across the 150-run mark.
??? ?
Raina brought up his fifty in 66 balls with a boundary in the backward point region but in pursuit of quick runs, he lost his off-stump to Finn in the 40th over.
??? ?
After the 35th over, India took their batting Powerplay but the home team failed to make use of it, accumulating only 18 runs off the four overs.
?? ?
?Dhoni and Jadeja then decided to accelarate and picked up a six and a four among them in the 43rd over to take India across the 200-mark.
??? ?
Jadeja blasted a six and a couple of fours off Woakes in the 45th over to amass 14 runs, while Dhoni picked up a couple of boundaries of Finn in the 47th over.
??? ?
In the last five overs, the duo accumulated 68 runs as India posted a challenging score for the visitors.?
