Industry Week: Innovation and cloud adoption with IBM ...

This Industry Week Post discusses how IBM PureSystems can help the banking industry utilize the cloud environment, this post was originally published on the Expert Integrated Systems blog on August 31, 2012.

For this week?s final posting, I will discuss how IBM PureSystems can help modern banks create innovative financial products and deploy those products into cloud environments.? Before banks can offer innovative products, they must assess the impact of these applications by monitoring business activities and operations, simulating functional outcomes, predicting performance and altering workflows dynamically.

In turn, banks must use this information effectively to constantly understand how their clients use specific financial products, how those products drive profitability, how satisfied are customers with the products and how should fees be adjusted so that offerings remain competitive. IBM PureSystems supports the Innovation imperative by enabling banks to react to customer demands through 20 to 30 times faster application deployment. Furthermore, by co-locating data within the same PureSystems frame, data access times are reduced and application performance is optimized.

For example, Fiserv, an IBM Business Partner, needed a low-cost mid tier bank-in-box solution based on legacy applications code, which lowers operational expenses, improves customer satisfaction and expands market opportunity. This independent software vendor (ISV) enabled their bank-in-a-box appliance solution, Premier, on an IBM PureFlex by utilizing IBM i OS, Cobol, and DB2 in a low cost form factor with reduced Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). By using the Premier architecture on a PureFlex Systems appliance, clients can easily aggregate data from multiple sources and give staff and customers real time access to the information. This simplifies inter-process communication, workflows, and accelerates business processes while extending the useful life of existing software assets. The results are:

  • ? Increased?transactions per hour?by 36 percent for greater scalability resulting in expanded market and revenue opportunities
  • ? Lowered?operational expenses?by reducing CPU utilization by 51 percent
  • ? Improved?customer satisfaction?and retention by cutting 26 percent off the average response time

Cloud computing for banks can lower operating costs, optimize qualities of service, improve client relationships and increase the instances of self-service offerings. In as little as four clicks, IBM PureSystems can accelerate cloud deployment by reducing costs and improving ease-of-use through the deployment of the IBM SmartCloud Entry offering. Also, the IBM SmartCloud Entry offering integrates compute, networking and storage into a singled managed console which can significantly reduce labor costs. The reduced application and infrastructure costs associated with the SmartCloud offering on PureSystems can yield a two times improvement in system utilization.
