Oscars change rule for best original song nominees

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? There will be more songs vying for Oscars at next year's Academy Awards.

The motion picture academy said Thursday that there will be a minimum of five nominees in the original song category at next year's ceremony.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences says that the five nominated songs receiving the highest number of votes from music branch members will be up for the final award. The voting process previously only allowed songs that earned an average score to be nominated.

Only two songs were nominated for the trophy earlier this year for the first time in Oscar history, with "Man or Muppet" from "The Muppets" winning the prize.

The 85th annual Academy Awards will be presented Feb. 24, 2013, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

As best teams ? Yanks, Rangers, Nats, Reds ? nurse issues, the fall will be wild

The Rangers and Yankees will enter the AL playoffs as the teams to beat, writes Tony DeMarco. But neither are locks to reach the ALCS.

Tony DeMarco

Baseball Expert Tony DeMarco has been covering the big leagues since 1987, and been casting Hall of Fame ballots for the last 15 years. He answers questions weekly here:

Q: With there being an extra wild-card spot this year, there are a lot of teams in contention for the playoffs. But in your opinion, which team is best suited to make a long run once in the postseason?
? Bobby Franklin, New York

A: Every contender ? even the regular-season top four of the Rangers, Yankees, Reds and Nationals ? have their share of concerns and potential trouble spots. That's what will make this postseason so tough to predict ? and likelier for a relatively unexpected World Series winner to emerge.

With talent levels for the top eight or so teams being fairly equal, it will come down to which teams are playing best in October: whose stars come through with clutch performances that win games, whose starting pitching performs best, whose closer is most dominant, whose roster is healthiest and operating on all cylinders. And at this point, it's really a guessing game.

The Rangers will go in as the AL favorites, with their offense, power bullpen and the motivation and focus sparked by consecutive World Series losses. Their rotation lacks that dominant guy, however, as keep in mind they have lost Cliff Lee, C.J. Wilson and Colby Lewis from their last two postseason rotations.

The Yankees have some health concerns right now, and those will need to be cleared up by October. Even so, you have to wonder about their No. 3-4 post-season starters, and as good a season as Rafael Soriano has had, he isn't Mariano Rivera.

Neither the Rays or Tigers would be playoff teams if the season had ended Monday, but either could be the team that gets hot. The Rays' chances are tied to their four-man rotation and lights-out, crooked-capped closer Fernando Rodney. With just enough offense, they are a solid sleeper pick.

The Tigers have underachieved to this point, and are in a fight for the playoff-qualifying lives. But there is great star power on Jim Leyland's squad, and great players can rise to the occasion in October.

I'm not picking the Nationals to win a pennant without Stephen Strasburg, so that leaves the Reds as NL favorites. They've proven they can win without Joey Votto, adding to that "this-is-our-year" feeling. The offense can be spotty at times, but there's enough of it, especially if the bullpen keeps shortening games. But Bronson Arroyo and Homer Bailey or Mike Leake will have to step up.

The Giants and Cardinals make for a dangerous next rung of top NL contenders. Everybody respects the Giants' pitching and they're playing with an edge in the wake of Melky Cabrera's suspension and all the hype surrounding the new Dodgers.

The Cardinals clearly were the NL's best team through mid-May before hitting an extended stretch of mediocrity, still have the league's most-dangerous lineup, and their pitching staff is coming together ? the exception being Lance Lynn.

For all the star power the Dodgers have added, it's very late to be expecting everything to come together so quickly, and as Don Mattingly said the other day, it likely will come down to their pitching. And there isn't enough beyond Clayton Kershaw.

Solar powered robotic sunfish grooves to the Grateful Dead

1 hr.

A proof-of-concept solar-powered robot modeled after the giant ocean sunfish could one day serve as biological sensor capable of keeping tabs on the environment.

A video released this week by the robot?s maker, senior scientist Tom Zambrano at AeroVironment, shows it swimming in Pacific Ocean as it grooves to the Grateful Dead?s Bird Song.

The delightfully chill viewing experience provides a few details about the robot, called Mola, which is derived from the scientific name of the giant ocean sunfish, Mola mola.

The fish are the largest known bony fish. They will sometimes float to the ocean surface and bask on their long, flat sides. That behavior appears to be the inspiration for the robot.

Mola looks as if its little more than flat solar panel with fins. As shown in the video, solar panels can be attached to rear to make a flexible tail that supplies additional power.

The panels collect enough power from the sun to cruise through the water at 2 knots as a data logger records physical, chemical, and biological information.

We?ve reached out to Zambrano for additional information on the robot and will update if we learn more.?

For now, watch the video and enjoy the high notes from the Grateful Dead. Given Jerry Garcia?s fondness for scuba in his later years, the song selection for the video clip feels alright.

Some automated securities trading systems in particular target penny shares when hunting for trading prospects. This is effective because penny shares are the least expensive, most changeable and wildly oscillating investments to be found in the market as it is way easier to persuade their position and price with less trading activity. For diabetics, a steady job is good for your health

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? If you're diabetic or prone to diabetes, having a steady job appears to be good for your health, and not just because of the insurance coverage.

A new University of Michigan study found that that jobless working-age people with diabetes are less likely to adhere to their oral anti-diabetic medications than diabetics who are employed. Further, people of working age with diabetes are more likely to be unemployed than those who do not have diabetes.

The lack of a clear-cut, cause-and-effect relationship between insurance and medication adherence surprised lead researcher Rajesh Balkrishnan of the U-M College of Pharmacy and School of Public Health.

"Improved use of medications is more than just a facet of having medical insurance. It is linked to bigger issues such as being employed, periods of joblessness or a personal financial strain," said Balkrishnan, who believes that a healthier, active lifestyle and access to medical care resources through employers that want employees to remain productive play a big role in adherence.

Other factors that account for lack of medication adherence include lack of financial resources, stress due to unemployment and lack of access to health care.

Researchers looked at diabetes because it is one of the most commonly present chronic conditions in working-age adults in the United States, Balkrishnan said. And globally, diabetes is the seventh-leading cause of death and the eighth-most costly disease to treat. In 2007, total health care costs for diabetes were estimated at $174 billion.

Policy changes would help, Balkrishnan said.

"Workforce participation for adults with diabetes and other chronic conditions command the attention of public policymakers, particularly when prioritizing resource allocation," he said. "As a starting position, health care providers and systems need standard processes to identify individuals facing financial pressure and their vulnerability to lower medication adherence."

CorpNet: Behind the Scenes of a Business Filing - Small Business ...

Nellie AkalpWhen you digitally file to incorporate your business or become an LLC, the process is purely digital, right? Not so, says Nellie Akalp, CEO of CorpNet. For her company, the process is highly hands-on and fast paced to get the fast turnaround it guarantees clients.

How it Works

The process begins with a customer submitting an order online. This might be to file a corporation, LLC, DBA, or a business license or permit. As soon as the order is received (or the next business day if the order comes in after hours) a CorpNet staffer calls the customer to confirm the information.

The client relations specialist then performs a name clearance to make sure no one else has filed the same name. The information is then input onto state approved documents (CorpNet files for all the states), and it?s sent on to be approved.

Because CorpNet has a good relationship with state agencies, the entire process takes 7-10 days (with expedited service available). Once the paperwork comes back approved by the agency, CorpNet puts the finishing touches on the packet and sends it to the client. And just like that, folks, you?ve become a corporation.

Putting Her Money Where Her Mouth Is

Nellie doesn?t make empty promises. She stands behind her company?s guarantees. When a big-time movie producer called, desperately needing to file a Nevada corporation asap, he was incredulous when she assured him CorpNet could file the paperwork in record time.

?He did not believe me, so I made a deal with him: I said I would take care of this filing and guarantee not only the filing but also the processing time, and if I did not live up to my promise that it would be no charge. However, if I came through for him, that he would have to give me another 10 orders as well.? Well, guess what? We have processed over 100 corporations for this client to date.?

The Small Business Difference

Not every company that files business documents is a small business, but that?s exactly what CorpNet is most proud of. Nellie?proudly says that her company is a ?small business helping other small businesses,? and it shows in the care each employee puts into each order.

?I?m a?strong advocate in educating small business owners and entrepreneurs about the importance of protecting their personal assets through business incorporation and trademark protection?I want them to be aware of the liabilities that they open themselves up to without having the protection of a corporate shield such as a corporation or an LLC.?

An Influencer of Small Businesses

Nellie?was honored as one of the Top 100 Small Business Influencer Champions for 2012, proving to her that she?s on the right track with her mission to educate entrepreneurs:

?It?s definitely confirmation and validation that from a career standpoint I am doing exactly what I am supposed to be doing, which is empowering, inspiring, and educating small business owners and entrepreneurs about starting, protecting, and running their small business?and more importantly that the content and information that I am publishing out there is credible, right on point and well received and acknowledged.?

This article is part of a series highlighting key players in the?Small Business Influencer Awards.

Romantic experiences of 'pure nature' damage the environment

Consumers conjure romantic notions of nature through practices that often harm the environment, according to an academic study of surfing culture? recently published in the Journal of Consumer Research.

Dr Robin Canniford of the Department of Management and Marketing and Avi Shankar of the University of Bath identified the surfing community as an example of people who consider themselves as living close to nature. In order to ascertain how consumers assemble romantic notions of nature, Drs Canniford and Shankar ?lived and breathed surfing culture, exploring surfers? home, work and travel environments, with the aim of gaining a deeper understanding of how notions of nature are created and consumed?.

?Patagonia?s ?footprint chronicle? scheme for instance, enables consumers to assess the environmental impact of supply chains and production resources?

Despite desiring romantic experiences of nature as wild, isolated, and untouched, surfers experience a variety of contradictions to these romantic ideals. Oftentimes, experiences of nature are crowded, fraught with aggression and involve cultural institutions such as fashion, sport and subcultures. In response, surfers use three kinds of ?purifying practices? to restore romantic experiences of nature.

Firstly consumers ?mask? objects or procedures that clash with the romantic notions of nature. ?Many surfers seek to hide or ignore the scripts, rules and technologies that indicate that nature and culture are intimately connected. Similar masking practices are used in other contexts. Canniford explains that ?organizers of Wild-West re-enactments, for example, hide cars, trucks and portable toilets from the event in order to create a raw version of nature that fur-traders and gold miners might have experienced in centuries previous?. However, in many instances, these practices harm natural environments further by sweeping damaging objects and events under the carpet.

Perhaps less damaging to nature are consumers? attempts to purify nature by purging certain cultural resources and social tensions from their experiences. According to Robin, ?methods of purging include boat charters and private resorts that limit numbers of consumers at certain locations so as to preserve an unspoiled experience of nature. By masking or purging cultural objects or other people from encounters in nature, consumers can temporarily preserve experiences of nature as an Edenic escape from urban life and culture?.

However, these strategies can also impact negatively on the environments that consumers enjoy as Dr Canniford explained, ?though the Maldives are frequently considered as an archetypal island paradise, the masking of consumers? waste products there has led to whole islands being swamped by trash that is now polluting the crystal blue sea that tourists travel so far to encounter. Similarly, ?Acts of verbal or physical violence against other surfers have become a common method of alleviating crowded experiences of nature?. By purging other consumers from nature, either through acts of violence or by privatizing locations, experiences of nature are increasingly fastened to disciplinary legislation and commercial structures, neither of which improve overall enjoyment of the natural environment?.

Fortunately, Canniford and Shankar also found sustainable kinds of purifying practices in which consumers seek to redress the potential damage done by their activities. ?Some surfers are acutely aware of the fragility of nature, such that they desire increasingly ecologically friendly consumer technologies. Improved demand for these resources offers a rich seam of marketing practice in which outdoor equipment manufacturers and tourism service providers become purity suppliers that help consumers to consume nature in less damaging manners. Patagonia?s ?footprint chronicle? scheme for instance, enables consumers to assess the environmental impact of supply chains and production resources? explains Dr Canniford. The study suggests that policy makers and businesses should look to such examples to improve the ways in which they use the natural environment in business practice.

International Leaders in Documentary Film Converge in Camden for
Fourth Annual Points North Documentary Forum September 28-29
Forum Held in Conjunction with Camden International Film Festival September 27-30

Camden, Maine ? The Camden International Film Festival (CIFF) has unveiled the lineup for its Points North Documentary Forum. Now in its fourth year, Points North has quickly become the largest gathering in New England of documentary filmmakers and key industry decision makers. The two-day conference program runs concurrently with the festival from September 28 ? 29, 2012 at the historic Camden Opera House.

Points North provides independent documentary filmmakers opportunities for professional development and creative inspiration through a wide range of panel discussions, workshops, case studies, networking events and a public pitch session. Additionally, several industry delegates will be available for one-on-one pitching sessions with forum attendees on September 28.

Filmmakers, students and other Points North attendees will have numerous opportunities to connect with industry delegates throughout the festival weekend, both formally during one-on-one pitch sessions and informally during CIFF parties, happy hours and a special Friday-night reception honoring the 25th anniversary of PBS? flagship documentary series POV, sponsored by The Orchard.

?What really distinguishes Points North from other documentary conferences in major cities is the opportunity to connect on an intimate, personal level with both industry delegates and fellow filmmakers in a beautiful setting,? says Points North Director Sean Flynn. ?Camden provides the perfect retreat-like environment for filmmakers to focus on professional and creative development while reflecting on the future of documentary storytelling.?

One of the themes in this year?s Points North program will be how documentary storytelling is changing in response to new media technologies. In one panel discussion, top representatives from the New York Times, Vimeo and Etsy.com will explore how short documentaries are being used on the web to engage new audiences and experiment with new creative directions. A series of curated shorts from each of these sources will be shown before select screenings throughout the festival weekend.

As documentary filmmakers begin to explore the creative possibilities of interactive storytelling, Points North will host an exclusive hands-on workshop with Zeega, an open-source platform for inventing new forms of storytelling which was incubated at Harvard?s metaLAB. The workshop will be open to both professionals and amateurs alike, since using Zeega requires no prior filmmaking or programming experience. It will be presented in partnership with the University of Maine, Bowdoin College, Maine Media Workshops and Northeast Historic Film.

Another conference highlight will be ?Kickstarter School?, a crowdfunding workshop led by Kickstarter?s film program director Elisabeth Holm. Other panels will provide an overview of the current broadcast and distribution landscape for independent documentaries.

For filmmakers interested in strengthening their storytelling craft, Points North will feature an editing and story structure workshop led by Mary Lampson, Maine-based editor of the classic Academy Award-winning Harlan County, USA, and another workshop led by David Redmon and Ashley Sabin, directors of Downeast and last year?s critically-acclaimed Girl Model.

Once again this year, some of the documentary industry?s leading broadcasters, distributors, funding organizations and executive producers will convene at the Points North Pitch, a public pitch session held during the Forum on September 29. Up to six filmmakers will be given an opportunity to pitch their works-in-progress and receive critical feedback before a live audience. The event, which will be free and open to the public, is a unique opportunity for filmmakers to secure vital support for their projects and audience members to see how documentaries are developed in their early stages.

Filmmakers with feature-length documentaries in the works can apply to the Points North Pitch by submitting a short synopsis and trailer before the extended September 7 deadline. This year?s panel will include some of the documentary film industry?s most important decision-makers, including Simon Kilmurry from the PBS series POV, Beth Janson Executive Director of the Tribeca Film Institute, Brian Newman from Brainstorm Media and DIRECTV, Winona Meringolo from Discovery Channel, Sara Archambault from LEF Foundation, and many more. One project will receive a ?Best Pitch? award, which comes with a $1000 cash prize from Documentary Educational Resources and a $3000 scholarship to Maine Media Workshops.

In 2010, Maine-based filmmakers Jason Mann and Cecily Pingree won ?Best Pitch? with their film Betting the Farm. Since then, they?ve won competitive grants from the Sundance Documentary Fund, LEF Foundation and Chicken & Egg Pictures, and have been invited to the prestigious Sundance Producers Institute. They now return to CIFF to screen as the official opening night film.

?In just two years, we?ve seen tremendous success connecting regional filmmakers with leading industry representatives,? says Ben Fowlie, founder and director of the Camden International Film Festival. ?It is extremely exciting to see this event grow each year, and we?re honored to provide a platform for filmmakers to introduce their projects to some of the most influential decision-makers in the documentary industry.?

Access to the full conference program is open to all CIFF passholders and is not limited to those who are selected for the pitch. Passes are now on sale on the Camden International Film Festival website. For more information, please visit: www.camdenfilmfest.org/pointsnorth.

Tea Party pushes for change at convention

The Republican National Convention will be shortened one day by bad weather, but activists from the conservative Tea Party movement heralded advancing Tropical Storm Isaac as a timely symbol of big changes ahead after November's election.

"We are looking at a hurricane here in Florida," said Michele Bachmann, a Tea Party founder and conservative member of the House of Representatives, late Sunday to a rally Christian conservatives and Tea Party faithful on the margins of the convention.

"We're looking at a political hurricane," she said in a speech electrifying her supporters. "We're looking at a spiritual hurricane," she said, further whipping up the crowd.

The Tea Party -- a powerful Republican faction responsible in large part for the return of the House of Representatives to Republican control in 2010 -- is to play a relatively small role at this week's convention, which has been curtailed from a four-day gathering to just three here in the Gulf Coast city of Tampa.

But they made a show of force at the afternoon and evening of rallies and prayer meetings Sunday at a local mega-church -- an event meant to rouse the support of this most conservative of the Republican party's faithful.

"It's time for each of us to show up and suit up and stand up," Bachmann exhorted the crowd, to thunderous applause.

The meeting here, several miles away from the official Republican convention events downtown, provided a needed outlet for conservatives who have always been lukewarm toward former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, who this week will formally named the party's presidential nominee.

The pre-convention gathering at The River at Tampa Bay Church, which was billed as a "unity rally," gave conservatives a chance to celebrate their considerable clout in the Republican party after scarcely three years' existence.

At a different forum earlier Sunday however, another Tea Party favorite was in a far less conciliatory mood.

Texas Congressman Ron Paul, a perennial presidential contender, including his failed bid earlier this year, led a rally of devoted followers Sunday, in sounding almost defiant as he exhorted his followers to continue to press for greater change from within the party.

Paul, 77, who is leaving Congress at the end of this year, was not given a speaking role at this year's convention, despite being one of the Republicans' most prominent figures -- although he is to be celebrated with a video tribute on Tuesday.

"Believe me, we will get in the tent because we will become the tent eventually," he said.

"With the energy that we have, it seems to me they would be begging and pleading for us to come into the party," he said at a rally in a separate venue that preceded Tea Party rally.

Bachmann presidential ambitions fizzled out earlier this year, as did those of another speaker at Sunday's event -- former pizza business executive Herman Cain.

Bachmann faltered over a series of of gaffes and missteps, while Cain's candidacy unraveled largely because of a sex scandal and the perception that his campaign was driven by little more than his "9-9-9" tax reform program that he recited so often it became a subject of parody.

Both however remain beloved figures among conservative Republicans.

Of the roughly 2,000 people in attendance was Steve Haller, who said he drove all the way from Louisiana to be attend the Tea Party event, who said he hoped it would bring the various disparate factions of the party together.

"I expect unity from this night's event this is about bringing everyone together," he said, adding that the party's various factions needed to come coalesce around Romney's candidacy to ensure Democratic President Barack Obama's defeat this fall.

His aim is to bring the US down to its knees. I don't want that," he said.

"I'm not against Obama, I'm for America. Obama's the one who's against America," said Haller.

Under a red, white and blue umbrella, Maryann Kempf also said the Tea Party's message lined up with her own beliefs and said it played an essential role in Republican politics.

"Conservatism needs to rule the day to get this country back on track," she said.

The Tea Party is a constant reminder of conservatism and the need to stop spending," she said.

Energy efficient light bulbs | Home Improvement Blog , Tips , Tricks ...

Home Improvement

One of the many ways you can help save mother earth and to live a green lifestyle is to make use of an energy efficient light bulb in your home or Office. In order to achieve this goal, you need to install compact fluorescent light bulbs and replace the old and inefficient incandescent light bulbs. 20% of energy consumption by nearly all homes throughout the world is for lighting.

Are you aware that incandescent bulbs are inefficient actually? Yes! Actually only about 5% of energy use or consume is used to produce light and 95% are just dispersed as heat, which is not very easy and it really is a waste of energy. But we have used this kind of light for years now.

Today?s compact fluorescent light bulbs are slowly replacing traditional incandescent bulbs. There are many reasons why. Compact bulbs use up to 80 early% less power which is very beneficial for the consumer because it can help them to cut down on the cost of energy. Not only uses less energy, but is also capable of producing the same quality of light which produce other light bulbs. These lamps also tend to last up to ten times longer than incandescent bulbs; have up to 10,000 hours of light bulb. Compared to other types of light bulbs, these lights are so much cooler. And when you think about the savings that can be achieved throughout the duration that you are using the fluorescent bulb, you may be surprised how much it can save.

Another type of bulb that can help save mother earth and uses less energy is the LED or light emitting diodes. LED lights are much more efficient than both fluorescent lights and incandescent bulbs. Compared with fluorescent lamps LED uses up to 40% less energy and last up to 6 times longer. Plus they have no mercury at all. However, the brightness that it produces is not so brilliant compared to incandescent and fluorescent bulbs. LED lamps are still be improved today.

These are the alternatives that will help you save a lot of energy and help you cut your cost of electricity. It will also help save mother earth. These bulbs could cost more than traditional lamps, however, if you just think about the long-term benefit that you can enjoy if you choose to use it. And you don?t have to change it often.

Automotive History: An Illustrated History Of ... - Curbside Classic

(Please note that some of these pictures were difficult to attribute, but a number of them have been traced back to the original source, this Flickr account by Drivermatic. Make sure you check out his huge collection of Checker photos, and thanks for the superb photographic resource!)

For sixty years, Checker Motors had a record unbroken run of profits building a few thousand cars per year in a small little factory in Kalamazoo, Michigan. In 1981, it posted its first loss, $488,326, and its owner made good on his threat to stop production of the iconic Marathon if his workers didn?t accept wage concessions. But Checker continued to stamp out body parts for GM into 2009, including for the Buick LaCrosse. The Carpacolypse of 2009 finally shuttered the ancient plant, but no need to shed a tear for the original owner?s son, David Markin: his wealth was recently estimated at over $100 million, until the Bernie Madoff scandal, anyway. And it was all due to a shrewd investment of $15,000 that his father made in 1920, which put him in the driver?s seat of Checker Motors. Let?s take a ride through Checker?s history. Taxi!

To understand the origins of Checker, one has to know that the taxi business was once very different than now: two or more companies competed fiercely in each city for the growing and lucrative business in those days. If you want the remarkable details of shady deals, graft and stock manipulation that created the two largest cab companies, Yellow and Checker, head over to coachbuilt.com?s very detailed history. A slightly less detailed but also excellent Checker history is also at checkertaxistand.com. Lets just say the upshot was that Checker Cabs wanted a custom built taxi, and somehow the son of a poor Russian tailor, Morris Markin, cleverly managed to manipulate himself (and some stock holdings he managed to get revalued) in the position to provide it, the first Checker Model C of 1922.

?

It?s important to remember that in the twenties, there were dozens of small car manufacturers, so in its early days, Checker?s scale wasn?t at all unusual. And the factory instantly became a profitable enterprise. And Markin expanded his holdings with Checker stock and profits including some large taxi operating companies and in later years truck trailer building (Great Dane) and other businesses.

During this period, taxis competed on prestige, size and comfort, as most working folks stuck to taking the streetcar or bus. The Checkers from the late twenties were large handsome cars, and as in the old coach-built tradition, often had a rear roof section that could be lowered in nice weather, as much as to be seen as to see.

Checker styling started becoming a bit adventurous in the thirties, but the the full degree of that was still a few years off.

?

As always, Checkers were designed specifically for the job, both in their layout and rugged construction.

The all-new Model A designed in 1939 and went into production the following year. It featured a highly bizarre front end whose only redeeming feature was that it was recognizable from half a mile away. The debate who designed it is still unresolved, but actually, from the front end back, it was a quite a conservatively styled sedan with a highly unusual feature.

It had a remarkably advanced (and patented) optional steel rear laundalet roof section that could be lowered as seen here.

Needless to say, Checkers dominated the New York streetscape, as in this moody shot of Times Square from the forties.

Rather unusual for such a small company, Checker ambitiously explored advanced designs during the forties, including this one-off rear-engined prototype. Looking all the world like a giant Fiat 600 Multipla, it was probably for the best that it was not developed further.

But a FWD prototype, with the straight six in a transverse arrangement was built and seriously considered. This is the first I?ve seen or heard about this, and its quite a remarkably advanced design for the times, looking much more French than Kalamazoo. Technical difficulties with the FWD transaxle killed it, probably for the best in terms of preserving the Checker reliability reputation.

Instead, the very conventional new A2 of 1947 had traditional styling, and with minor retouches, became the iconic cab of the post war era.

Like the legendary later Aerobus, Checker was building extended wheelbase vehicles in the forties, like this six door, twelve passenger wagon. These were the shuttle buses of their day.

In 1955, an all new Checker was developed in the advanced styling studios (a corner of the factory partitioned off with drapes). The new A8 was designed to meet Manhattan?s new taxi regulations, and featured independent suspension on the front for the first time. Not that it made the Checker famous for its ride, however. The suspension engineering department lived in the janitor?s closet.

Interior space was always the highlight of the Checkers, and the Marathon?s tall roof, totally flat floor and two folding jump seats meant that up to five patrons could be accommodated in the rear compartment alone. Guess who got the jump seats? The pretty young lady. Beats sitting in the guys? laps, anyway.

Here?s one of Checker?s many chassis engineers, pointing out the finer details of Checker?s legendary X-reinforced frame, the source of its ruggedness and flat floor.

?

The six and eight-door Aerobuses were the stuff of legends in their day. Unlike today?s stretch limos with their cut and welded frame extensions, these long boys sat on a completely unique and specially designed frame, and enjoyed a high degree of structural integrity.

Not surprisingly, the rugged Checker frame lent itself well to custom coachbuilding, like this Swiss ambulance. It was the Checker?s taxi cab image that probably kept it from more success in the US as a limo and hearse source. If folks couldn?t afford a Cadillac while they were still alive, they at least wanted to ride to their graves in one.

It should be pointed out that Checker production wasn?t all directed to taxis after about 1960 or so; possibly sooner. The Superba and Marathon sedans and wagons were marketed to owners who wanted no part of Detroit?s annual styling changes as well as its taxi-cab ruggedness.

Checker also made an extended body sedan, and pushed it as a limo alternative, including versions with padded roofs and even an opera window. But time was moving on, and the garish seventies made the Checkers look like stale bread.

Ghia made a one-off on a Checker chassis, the 1968 Centurion. I?m not quite sure whether that was at Checker?s instigation, but more than likely so. Who else? It had a very un-taxi like Italian leather and wood interior along with the requisite Nardi wood wheel.

In any case, it?s a handsome idea of what a modern Checker could have looked like. It has similarities with a number of contemporary cars; everything from a Toyota Crown to an Opel Kapitan.

Checker Motors operated most profitably with an annual production of 6-8k cars, but after 1970 that became increasingly difficult, due to major markets like NYC loosening their taxi regulations to allow conventional sedans to operate. They were obviously cheaper for the Big Three to build, and the fleet dumping practices of the seventies was Checker?s coffin nail as a producer of cars.

Checker had no real plans or ambitions for a post-Marathon future. Scion David Markin was more interested in playing tennis than Checkers.

The only significant changes made were those required by government regulations, such as the new bumpers beginning in 1974. Checker?s were particularly impressive, but then it suited their environment. They should have had them all along.

In 1977, former GM President Ed Cole bought 50% of Checker for $6 million and began plans to build a completely new car for a new era. His first prototypes were based on lengthened VW Rabbits, but his death at the controls of his personal airplane ended that. But some work continued based on his ideas, utilizing GM?s X-Body (Citation) FWD drivetrain and a solid rubber rear suspension spring. Checker founder?s son David Markin really had no taste for new ventures at Checker, and it all came to naught.

In 1981, during the recession, Checker had its only posted loss after some sixty years, having survived the Depression profitably, if on a smaller scale.? In a contentious affair, Checker decided to end production rather than give in to union demands. The last Marathon rolled off the production line on July 12, 1982.

But Checker continued to build parts for other manufacturers until 2009, when the downturn finally swamped them too. The little factory that hummed away for almost ninety years has been razed, leaving just the footings to mark where one of the more unusual automotive stories played out. Now its a pilgrimage site for lover of the brand.
