She looked up at Hui. "Tell me you know your way around here..?" She muttered softly, her brows furrowed. There were too many shops here, it was like the Chinese pearl and silk markets she snuck out to go to, only magical. The weretiger smiled and nodded, leading her to the first store, a wand store. She entered and looked at all the boxes of wands. Well, there was no shortage of those. "Hello?"

"Ah, welcome, dear princess..." An old man walked out, smiling at Bai Fan. Hui growled lowly but she silenced him. He stopped growling but watched the man with wary eyes.

"You know of me..?" She asked, raising an eyebrow. The man nodded and turned to the shelves. She followed his gaze, eager to get her first English wand.

"Of course, your father has helped a lot here..." That didn't surprised her, her father helped those who needed it. She merely shook her head.

"I would like a wand please, Mr. Ollivanders. If it's not too much trouble, that is, I'd like one made of materials I brought myself..." She held out her hand and Hui handed her a good thick branch of bocote wood and a vial filled with Manicore hairs. Ollivanders merely chuckled and took the items, looking them over.

"I would cost extra but I doubt that's a worry for you..." she smiled lightly. She liked this man, he was interesting, like the alley itself.

"Name your price, I will pay it."

Football: Fulham snap up Petric on free transfer

LONDON: Fulham have completed the signing of Croatia forward Mladen Petric, the English Premier League club announced Thursday.

The 31-year-old has joined the London side on a free transfer, signing a one-year deal, from Hamburg, where his contract recently expired.

During his time with the German club, Petric played under current Fulham manager Martin Jol and now he is aiming to help his new club improve on their ninth-place league finish last season.

"I played with Hamburg against the club two years ago in the Europa League," Petric told Fulham's website.

"It was very nice to play at Craven Cottage with a fantastic crowd and I have enjoyed a good relationship with every member of the club I have met since.

"I'm very happy to be part of what is happening at Fulham. The club is doing very well and that was why I decided to come here.

"I know the manager well and I know that he is always looking to strengthen his attacking options -- and I hope that we can do even better next season."

Convenience shoulders tomato taste aside

Breeding for consistent color in unripe fruit may have diminished flavor

Web edition : Thursday, June 28th, 2012

It looks like 70 years of breeding for better color in unripe fruit has inadvertently helped create the wet-paper towel flavor of the modern tomato.

Growers care about the green of unripe tomatoes, explains biochemist Ann L. Thomas Powell of the University of California, Davis. Ripening globes that are each uniformly green let growers easily judge when a field will be ready for harvest. Over decades breeders have selected for this uniform green coloring instead of for tomatoes that turn a deeper shade around the stem end, Powell says.

The problem is, getting rid of that dark green zone, called green shoulders, turns out to have sabotaged a gene called SIGLK2 that boosts sugar and other sources of flavor in the ripe tomato, Powell and her colleagues report in the June 29 Science.

?It is a good illustration of unintended consequences,? says molecular biologist Harry Klee of the University of Florida in Gainesville, who studies tomato flavor.
For years, Powell says, breeders assumed that a ripe red tomato got all of its sugars from the little photosynthetic engines known as chloroplasts in the plant leaves. It turns out, however, that a green-shouldered tomato gets about 20 percent of its sugars from its own chloroplasts. Without a functional SlGLK2 gene, the ripening tomato forms fewer and punier chloroplasts that don?t deliver, Powell and her colleagues have found.

Skimping on sugars certainly could make a difference in flavor, says Klee, who routinely does taste tests in his lab. His tomato testing panels respond strongly to sugar content. ?The more the better,? he says.

Volatile compounds wafting off a tomato?s flesh also play a big role in its appeal. The problem is, inadequate chloroplasts likewise won?t produce as much of the chemical precursors for some of those compounds. ?It?s totally obvious you?re going to take a hit in some of the volatiles,? Klee says.

In the June 5 Current Biology, he and his colleagues highlighted the importance of a handful of volatiles ? some of them mere whiffs ? in seducing the nose and taste buds.

Exactly what the loss of the green-shoulders trait means for tomato flavor remains to be measured. But, Klee says, ?it's not the whole story of why modern tomatoes are so bad, by a long shot.?

Picking them before they?re fully ripe diminishes flavor, as does refrigerating them. Chilling tomatoes below 13? Celsius kills metabolic processes still functioning in a picked tomato, Klee says, so the fruit never manages to replace the lovely volatiles that float away.

Even under ideal conditions, genetic differences will matter in flavor. When Klee and his colleagues pamper various commercial varieties, taste panels pan some of them and give the best ones decent but not brilliant ratings. And just because a variety is an heirloom doesn?t mean it tastes great, he cautions. For his taste panels, Cherry Roma is the reigning favorite.

When choosing among generic tomatoes, he recommends going for cherry tomatoes and other little types: ?Breeders haven?t had as much time to mess them up,? he says.

CIT Equipment Financing Study Finds Demand for Capital Goods ...

CIT Equipment Financing Study Finds Demand for Capital Goods

  • 82% of Executives Have Made at Least One Capital Goods Acquisition of Significant Value in the Past Year
  • 78% Intend to Acquire Capital Goods Within the Next 6 to 18 Months
  • 62% Say Vendor Financing Plays an Important Role in Their Lease Vs. Buy Decisions

Despite continued economic uncertainty, more than four out of five (82%) middle market executives have made at least one capital goods acquisition of significant value in the past year, and more than three-quarters (78%) say they plan to make one capital goods acquisition of significant value within the next six to 18 months.

?Executives overwhelmingly indicated their intent to acquire capital goods over the next six to 18 months. For buyers, this could present an opportunity to negotiate a good deal on assets that can go a long way toward improving efficiency or perhaps growing top-line revenues.?

These are some of the findings in the research study,?U.S. Capital Goods and Equipment Financing Outlook: A Focus on Essential Acquisitions, (cit.com/equipmentfinancingstudy) released by?CIT Group Inc. (NYSE: CIT)?cit.com, a leading provider of financing to small businesses and middle market companies and?Forbes Insights. This study is the latest research report from the?CIT Outlook Series?of exclusive industry studies focused on the perspectives of C-suite middle market executives.

The study gathered the views of 279 middle market executives on their capital goods decision making process and their outlook for equipment financing.

?Our study found that, despite general economic uncertainties, more than a third of executives reported their business need was simply too strong to delay their equipment purchase,? said?Ron Arrington, Global President of?CIT Vendor Finance. ?Executives also indicated that customer demand made such investments mandatory, or pointed to emerging opportunities that required new equipment. And as they seek to acquire new equipment, nearly two-thirds said the availability of vendor financing plays an important role in their decision making process.?

Vince Belcastro, Managing Director and head of?CIT Capital Equipment Finance, said, ?Executives overwhelmingly indicated their intent to acquire capital goods over the next six to 18 months. For buyers, this could present an opportunity to negotiate a good deal on assets that can go a long way toward improving efficiency or perhaps growing top-line revenues.?

Key Findings from the Report:

  • WHEN MAKING A PURCHASE, CASH IS KING:?As executives consider the purchase of capital goods, 54% indicate they would use cash; 45% cited bank credit lines; 32% said balance sheet financing; and 27% would use asset-based financing. In providing a reason for making a purchase now, rather than delay it, more than a third of executives (37%) said that the business need was simply too strong, 31% indicated that business opportunities required new equipment, and 30% reported that customer demand made such investments mandatory.
  • SEVERAL FACTORS IMPACT LEASE?VERSUS?BUY DECISIONS:?When it comes to lease versus buy decisions, executives typically consider a range of factors, including the expected impact on cash flow (74%), the cost of capital (65%), the return on the capital (60%), depreciation (57%), maintenance (57%), and taxes (53%).
  • AVAILABILITY OF VENDOR FINANCING KEY:?Whether in the form of a lease or a loan, nearly two-thirds of executives (62%) said the availability of vendor financing plays either an important (37%) or a very important (25%) role when deciding to acquire capital goods. Additionally, more than three out of five executives (64%) say they have chosen one or more vendors based on their ability to provide financing and 47% have ruled out one or more vendors based on their inability to offer financing.
  • A FOCUS ON EFFICIENCY GAINS: While many companies remain focused on cutting costs, some are getting leaner by buying new capital goods that deliver efficiency gains. For 31% of those who made an acquisition in the past year report that the capital good delivered efficiency gains.

"A Different View: Travels With Team Easy" Now on Kindle; Helps Cooking With the Troops

In 2007, my good friend and Cooking With the Troops pardner Blake Powers embedded with "Team Easy" in Iraq. Camera in hand, Blake chronicled a little-documented aspect of the war: not the combat, but the 90-99 percent of the time that is tedium or boredom.

Blake has compiled his photos into a book, A Different View: Travels With Team Easy, Iraq 2007. Good soul that he is, Blake has pledged 10% of the profits to benefit Cooking With the Troops.

"I work with soldiers on a daily basis and many friends and family have deployed in the past few years. But still, my ideas of their time there comes mostly from what I see and hear in the media. Mr. Powers presents a very different picture of the soldier's time in Iraq than I had been exposed to. It is beautifully photographed, a visual feast; his insightful comments add to the experience. Definitely worth the purchase price, and then some!"?

The good cause contribution is... icing on the cake. Again, as EmmDee would say: Get thee with the quickness!

Heat signals start of Berlin busy energy season

BERLIN -- Scorching summer temperatures signal the start of a busy season for employees of Berlin's Electric Department.

The heat that prompts the powering-on of air conditioners up and down the streets of Berlin also marks the start up of the town's four generators. By using the generators during the hottest part of the year -- when the town's consuming the most electricity -- Berlin is able to save about $600,000 a year.

"We get a credit at the end of the year," said Tim Lawrence, Berlin's electric utility director.

The process, he explained, is called peak shaving.

"Power travels in hills and valleys," he said, gesturing to a graph on a computer screen showing the ups and downs of power usage. "You're trying to shave the peak off."

To "shave the peak off," his staff runs the town's generators on extremely hot days to reduce some of the load -- to combat the increased number of people taking advantage of their air conditioners. The town has five generators, four of which function. Repairs to the damaged generator, Lawrence said, would cost more than they're worth. Instead, parts from that generator have been used to keep the other four, several of which date back to the 1960s, running.

Lawrence's department is notified of days when power usage is expected to be high by Booth & Associates, the electric consulting firm the town has used for the past few years.

"Their expertise has been invaluable," said Town Administrator Tony Carson, adding that the firm showed the electric department how to take better advantage of the generators.

Before Booth & Associates was hired, the department ran the generators on and off all year, costing the town a substantial amount in fuel. Now, the generators only run during the summer months.

As one would expect based on summer temperatures, peak days are typically between June and August. As a participant in the PJM program, the town is required to hit five peak days each year. Because it's impossible to tell which days will end up being peaks until the summer is through, the town turns on the generators on days when usage is expected to be high.

"We use historical data too," Lawrence said.

Last year, the town ran its generators 13 times and was successful in hitting five peak days.

Time for the House to Move on the Farm Bill - The Ferguson Group ...

Last week, the Senate passed the Agriculture Reform, Food and Jobs Act of 2012, S. 3240, by a vote of 64-35 after voting on nearly 70 amendments. Of particular interest to local governments, the bill reauthorizes various broadband programs - the Distance Learning and Telemedicine Grant program is reauthorized with no changes, and the Broadband Access Program is changed substantially to the benefit of local governments. It provides a grant and loan component ? similar to the stimulus broadband programs ? unlike the previous Farm Bill program that relied solely on loans for broadband expansion. Local governments are eligible loan and grant recipients and all applicants are required to collaborate with their units of local government (if the applicant is not the local government, but a private entity).

The rural business programs are reorganized: the Rural Business Opportunity Grant program and Rural Business Enterprise Grant programs are consolidated into the Rural Business Development Grants program.

The conservation title of the bill was cut by $6.44 billion, largely by reducing the Conservation Reserve Program and consolidating 23 existing programs into 13. The bill combines the easement authorities of the Wetlands Reserve Program, Grasslands Reserve Program, and Farmland Protection Program into a new Agricultural Conservation Easement Program in which local governments will still be eligible to preserve working agricultural lands.

Finally, the bill includes an amendment introduced by Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) that reinstates $150 million in mandatory funding to rural development and beginning farmer/rancher programs. The bill passed by the Senate Agriculture Committee did not include mandatory funding for any programs in the rural development title, but the final Senate-passed bill includes funds for the water/wastewater backlog, two rural development business programs, and additional funds for the Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program.

Action on the Farm Bill now turns to the House, where the House Agriculture Committee is scheduled to mark up its version of the bill on July 11.

Free Relationship Advice And Guidelines - Free Link Directory

Free relationship advice and ideas can be very useful. The first suggestion is that communication is important to an excellent relationship. People should not bottle up negativity or neglect to question everything that they need from a partner. Frequently a person remains silent simply because a conflict is undesired but this step can cause bitterness that could harm the relationship and lead to problems. Being open and truthful about feelings and issues is the greatest way to have a healthy relationship alive.

Always make use of common courtesy with the partner. Often a couple begins to take one another with no consideration and this can lead to a lack of courtesy for the other party. Remember to say please and thanks, and take into consideration methods to make the other individual satisfied. These ways will improve a relationship significantly and help build a stronger bond between the people.

Advice does not have to be pricey to be efficient. Free relationship advice involves the tip to put aside time to expend together weekly. A quick paced week implies that many couples neglect alone time together. If this is neglected for too much time the couple may feel far away and start to experience relationship problems. Take time for one another and this will boost the relationship. Spend some time to perform activities that the other person enjoys rather than always picking activities that are one sided.

One method to avoid strife in a relationship is to divide the amount of work and home chores. A lot of people may not mind one chore however dislike another, and a few compromise and discussion can lead to a cleaning schedule that works well both for parties. If one party dislikes dishes yet will carry out laundry then a deal can be attained so the chores get done with a minimum of fuss or stress.

Be sure to assess any advice before following it though, and be wary of advice from unfamiliar sources or individuals who may have malicious motives. Every relationship may have a few problems however good communication and honesty will go further to keeping the relationship good and solid.

Taking advantage of free relationship advice can create any relationship greater and much stronger.

What Is Service Oriented Architecture (SOA)?

10:01 PM By Article Directory

'; div.innerHTML = summary; } //]]> What Is Service Oriented Architecture (SOA)? What Is Service Oriented Architecture (SOA)?

Service oriented architecture has gained more popularity with its acronym SOA. But have we ever submerged ourselves a little deep in order to split the basic questions in which everyone gets entwined.

Is SOA a Product or a Technology? Neither it is a technology and definitely not a product. It is a computing methodology that endows with a strategy to architect your IT milieu to respond speedily & cost effectively for business transformation. Or in simpler terms it is the technical facilitator for the today's businesses to competently team up with the other trades & react promptly to the constantly-altering market circumstances at an abridged outlay.

SOA, A Hot Tech Buzz Word - How? Yes, SOA's rising popularity has made it the latest and hottest tech buzz in the www. Era. It is prefixed with almost every product and service today because of the noteworthy benefits that it amasses for them. But this term has to be understood alon g with appreciating the challenges that come with it. It is an answer to the demanding consumers by making businesses agile and helping them survive in context to the survival of the fittest.

Features Illustrated The prominent features in the services in SOA can be stated as under:-

Elemental Building Blocks Can be used disjointedly or as a package Used for compound functionality and customersSOA's Principles For a better understanding of the topic some of the core principles of SOA can be exemplified as:- Discoverability It permits the internal & external customers & systems to discern the services offered by a business through an industry standard registry. Loose-Coupling It consents the business processes to be defined as distinct services, yet grant a mechanism for the services to assimilate and switch over data and messages on a need basis. Composability It facilitates the business to combine existing service into one service offering. This negates obliteration of services and plays down formation of new services. Reusability It lets the businesses to influence existing resources & services without having to generate new ones. Though reuse is not a new-fangled concept, with SOA it acquires a whole new connotation - reuse of business processes in part or full. Interoperability The business will be able to integrate two or more services if the integration points & information exchanged are standardized. Alliance With alliance, a business' competence to proffer services by teaming up with external companies will amplify exponentially.

The above can also be taken as the benefits that accrue to the businesses from SOA.

SOA Implementation The implementation of SOA can be discussed under the three different types of approaches, namely:- Top Down Approach A near utopian solution for organizations building IT infrastructure ground up, for the first time Meticulous & full analysis of business requirements precedes recognition & implementation of services Bottom Up Approach A practical strategy- executed on the foundation of an existing IT infrastructure Permits maximum reuse, implementation precise to existing business requirements Down Side: Probability to diverge from service- oriented concepts is high, owing to no preliminary analysis of the total IT landscape Meeting the Middle ApproachAn optimal Strategy Advocates analysis from a long term standpoint & analogous implementation Reuses existing infrastructure to deliver today's business needs.

Is SOA different from distributed computing or Object Oriented Methodology or Application Service Providers (ASP's)?

SOA is a methodology that evolved over the years taking into account quite a number of computing methodologies & merging it with the business demands of today. It is now mature and is adopted by numerous enterprises universally.Discoverability & Compatibility are two chief distinguishing factors of SOA.

Is SOA different from distributed computing or Object Oriented Methodology or Application Service Providers (ASP's)?

SOA is a methodology that evolved over the years taking into account quite a number of computing methodologies & merging it with the business demands of today. It is now mature and is adopted by numerous enterprises universally. Discoverability & Compatibility are two chief distinguishing factors of SOA. Discoverability - conceptualizes the end clie nts from the location, execution & IT infrastructure of SOA based system. This gives massive suppleness and supplementary security to organizations hosting an SOA based system. Composability on the other hand facilitates composition of business processes on the fly, based on the end-client's requirements. It benefits are enumerated as under:- Reuse of existing implementations of business processes. Custom Empowerment - capability to choose the option customer wants Reduced time to market for new services

A Common Misconception It is a very common misconception that SOA is none other than the Web services itself. But this point needs a clear clarification and that is; Web service is a technology whereas SOA is a methodology. One can implement a methodology utilizing a technology and web services specifically play this role in the context of SOA that has been stated a few words before. Since web-services prop up the core SOA principles, it has become one of the most favored choices.

Benefits that accrue from SOA

Appends value to businesses guaranteed Saves money Augments productivity Trims down / Eliminates Re-Engineering Helps in building agile systems

South Africa to toughen smoking law

Johannesburg

Health authorities are working at tightening South Africa?s anti-smoking laws, proposing a total ban on indoor smoking and even making it illegal to puff away in open spaces such as beaches.

Stadiums, zoos, parks, outdoor eateries and beer gardens would all be affected. At beaches, smoking would only be allowed at least 50 metres from the closest person.

But before introducing any new law, the health ministry will throw open the proposals to the public in discussions next week.

Article continues below

It is the second time in five years that South Africa has tried to amend its legislation to make it even harder for smokers to indulge in their habit.

Even before the regulations are debated and final decisions made however, many smokers are fuming, labelling the plans as ?extreme?, ?shameless? and an intrusion on people?s rights.

Hysteria

?It?s a kind of hysteria, a kind of peculiar semi-religious fundamentalist puritanism,? said Leon Louw, director of the Free Market Foundation, a think tank pushing for an open society free of regulations.

?It?s a kind of vicious assault on other peoples? choices and lifestyles.?

If the regulations went through they could constitute a breach of freedom and even result in job losses, the foundation suggests.

?The anti-tobacco fanatics... the nicotine nazis or nico-nazis obviously will not stop until it?s full prohibition,? he added.

In 2007, lawmakers approved a litany of changes that sought to close loopholes in the Tobacco Products Control Act of 1993.

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court of Appeal upheld that law?s blanket ban on tobacco ads.

It rejected a lawsuit brought by British American Tobacco SA, which had argued that the restrictions infringed on the company?s free speech rights.

Stringent proposals

Buoyed by that case, anti-smoking lobbyists are rejoicing at the latest stringent proposals.

?It goes the next step to protect health and we think it will work practically,? said Peter Ucko, director of the National Council Against Smoking.

Pro-smoking lobbyists argue that enforcing such a broad ban would be impossible, but Ucko insisted the laws will work.

Since the 2007 regulations, ?no one smokes in shopping malls anymore,? he said.

Hoteliers appear unfazed by the pending changes.

?There may be certain discomfort for restaurants and pubs, but for the hotels, I don?t think there will be an impact from the revenue point of view,? said Eddie Khosa of the Federated Hospitality Association of Southern Africa. If the changes are adopted, South Africa would become the first African country to go smoke-free.

There were some 7.7 million adult tobacco users in South Africa last year, lighting up an estimated 27 billion cigarettes, according to the Tobacco Institute of Southern Africa.

But these numbers are 30-per cent down on those from 10 years ago.

No Name Farm/Ranch: Future Telling

Out of morbid curiosity I peaked back at some one year old blog posts, not quite sure what I'd find, but certain it would bring back all kinds of disgusting memories of the loan-getting/builder-interviewing/life-upside-downing process.

I found some of that, to be sure.? But then I also found this - so absolutely prescient that I shivered.? Especially to realize that exactly one year later - to the day - we brought home another year's worth of hay.? I shook the feeling off fast and went out to pet my snoozing pyrenees and feed the baby goats who (like last year's post says) weren't even born at the time I wrote it.? I guess it wasn't future-telling so much as just making sure things actually happened.?

Damn it feels good, either way.

Joe Arpaio Tent City Protests: Thousands Gather For Rally

PHOENIX -- Several thousand critics of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio gathered outside "Tent City" Saturday night for a rally calling for the closure of the sheriff's complex of canvas jail tents.

Organizers say conditions at "Tent City" complex are inhumane. The sheriff has said he doesn't see any problems with housing inmates in tents and often points out that some members of the U.S. military live in tents.

"We are with you," protesters chanted in both English and Spanish, in hopes that inmates could hear them.

Most protesters held candles and wore yellow T-shirts that read "Standing on the side of love," a slogan of the Unitarian Universalist Association, which was holding its annual convention in Phoenix this weekend.

The rally was the latest effort by the association to promote social justice, association spokesman John Hurley said. The Unitarians organized the rally along with the immigrant rights group Puente Arizona.

The Rev. Peter Morales, president of the Unitarian Universalist Association, attended the rally and was among a group that accompanied Arpaio on a tour of Tent City. In 2010, Morales was arrested at a protest in Phoenix over Arizona's immigration law.

Rachel Walden, who works at the Unitarian Universalist Association headquarters in Boston, said the group also gathered Saturday to protest the immigration law.

"We wanted to stand in solidarity with the immigration groups," she said. "We just wanted to be there to have a big presence and say this is wrong."

Arpaio is a national political fixture who built his reputation on jailing inmates in tents during Phoenix's triple-digit summer heat, dressing inmates in pink underwear, selling himself to voters as unceasingly tough on crime and pushing the bounds of how far local police can go to confront illegal immigration.

The U.S. Justice Department has accused the sheriff's office of racially profiling Latinos in its immigration patrols.

The sheriff has said the Justice Department's investigation of his immigration patrols was a politically motivated attack by the Obama administration and denied allegations of systematic discriminatory policing.

The jail complex in west Phoenix was the site of a January 2010 protest that drew 10,000 immigrant rights advocates and was marked by a clash between a small group of protesters and police officers.

The county's jails were closed to visitors on Saturday because of the rally.

Jerry Sandusky Lawyers: We Tried To Quit

BELLEFONTE, Pa. ? Jerry Sandusky's lawyers said Saturday they tried to quit at the start of jury selection in his child sex abuse trial because they weren't given enough time to prepare, raising an argument on the trial's speed that could become the thrust of an appeal.

And one of the jurors who convicted Sandusky of 45 child sex abuse counts said Saturday he was swayed by the "very convincing" testimony of eight accusers who said the retired Penn State assistant football coach molested them for years.

"It's hard to judge character on the stand, because you don't know these kids," juror Joshua Harper told NBC's "Today" show. "But most were very credible ? I would say all."

A day after Sandusky's conviction, his lawyers disclosed they felt too unprepared to adequately defend him because of how quickly the case was brought to trial. Experts have said the seven months between Sandusky's November arrest and trial was fast-paced by Pennsylvania standards.

"We told the trial court, the Superior Court and the Supreme Court we were not prepared to proceed to trial in June due to numerous issues, and we asked to withdraw from the case for those reasons," attorney Joe Amendola told The Associated Press.

The issues included a scheduling conflict with a defense team member and the need to read a cache of documents produced by a lengthy grand jury investigation. Judge John Cleland denied their request.

The attorneys raised other issues that could be part of the future appeal, saying a mistrial was sought and denied over a repetition at trial of a brief part of a November interview Sandusky had with NBC's Bob Costas.

Jurors in the two-week trial convicted Sandusky of 45 of the 48 counts against him, meaning Sandusky, 68, likely will die in prison.

Harper said the accusers who testified one by one of horrific abuse at Sandusky's hands were each believable, "but then also the fact that we saw this corroborating story between all of them. It was very convincing."

Then Sandusky's impassive face when the verdict was read was confirmation for the jury, he said.

"I looked at him during the reading of the verdict and just the look on his face. No real emotion," he said, "because he knew it was true."

Harper said jurors had some issues with the testimony of Mike McQueary, a then-assistant who said he saw Sandusky assaulting a boy in the Penn State showers in 2001; jurors acquitted Sandusky on one count relating to the incident.

The case is poised to move to an investigation of university officials' role in reporting the charges; two ex-school administrators face trial on charges they didn't properly report McQueary's account of the suspected abuse in 2001.

Almost immediately after the verdict, Penn State President Rodney Erickson signaled an openness to quickly settle potential civil lawsuits arising from the convictions, saying the school "wants to provide a forum where the university can privately, expeditiously and fairly address the victims' concerns and compensate them for claims."

The university recently reported a $1.8 billion endowment. But both sides have reasons not to want to go to court, said Jason Kutulakis, a Harrisburg-area lawyer who specializes in child welfare and juvenile law. Victims are reluctant to get on the stand and have their credibility attacked, he said.

But "Penn State's got so much egg on their face, they probably just want to make it all go away," he said.

For now, the school is facing one lawsuit from an accuser, Travis Weaver, who was not among those represented in the criminal case against Sandusky.

Lawyers for McQueary, who testified against Sandusky, have signaled their intent to sue, along with a lawyer for one accuser, so-called Victim 5.

Jeff Anderson, who represents Weaver, said that he represents more victims of Sandusky's and that he will ask the court to allow him to begin seeking information from Penn State in Weaver's case.

The next step is to determine the extent of Penn State's culpability, lawyers say. In part, that means finding out who in the university's upper ranks knew Sandusky was preying on boys and could have stopped it.

The former Penn State officials facing charges, athletic director Tim Curley and retired vice president Gary Schultz, are charged with lying to a grand jury about what they knew of a 2001 incident in which McQueary said he saw Sandusky assaulting a boy in a football team shower.

A separate investigation by ex-FBI director Louis Freeh, who was hired by Penn State's board of trustees to investigate the university's handling of the Sandusky allegations, is due later this summer.

Hall of Fame coach Joe Paterno was fired for a failure of leadership for not going to the police after McQueary told him about that incident. The scandal also caused the departure of university president Graham Spanier.

Philadelphia-based lawyer Fortunato Perri Jr., who followed the trial, said the jury's dismissal of the charge involving the 2001 shower incident could help Curley and Schultz' defense.

"You've now had a jury kind of preview your case with respect to the credibility of McQueary, and they didn't believe him," Perri said. "Who knows if the next jury would believe him or not believe him?"

But the administrators' attorneys would probably be precluded from introducing the acquittal evidence at the separate trial, Perri said.

Sandusky's sentencing is expected to occur in about three months; an exact date hasn't been set. Because of the severity of the charges and mandatory minimum sentences, he faces an effective life sentence.

Until his next court date, Sandusky is one of 272 inmates at the Centre County Correctional Facility, seven miles from the Penn State campus. He was kept under watch overnight and is allowed access to some personal items including a prayer book, and can get visits from family, friends and attorneys.

Rominger said he planned to visit him on Sunday.

LEADING TASMANIAN UNIONIST SUPPORTS MARRIAGE EQUALITY / QUESTIONS LABOR ENDORSEMENT FOR SENATORS WHO DON?T
ADVOCATES ASK BILYK AND POLLEY TO MEET COUPLES / FAMILIES AFFECTED BY DISCRIMINATION

The Secretary of Unions Tasmania, Kevin Harkins, has questioned why the two Tasmanian Labor Senators who continue to oppose same-sex marriage, Catrina Bilyk and Helen Polley, receive the support of the Party.

In an article in the current edition of the Unions Tasmania publication, The Workers? Voice, Mr Harkins declares his support for marriage equality stating,

?My view that there is no such thing as heterosexual, lesbian or homosexual relationships. There are only relationships. Marriage should be based on love and respect, irrespective of gender.?

He then goes on to question why Labor endorses Senators Bilyk ad Polley when they oppose a policy of marriage equality that has been given strong support at successive Labor State Conferences.

?The Tasmanian ALP has a firm policy position which supports marriage equality, endorsed again at the 2011 ALP State Conference.?

?Why do the Senators continue to receive the support of Tasmanian ALP members when they fail to comply with the wishes of the majority of party members on this issue??

Tasmanian Gay and Lesbian Rights Group spokesperson, Rodney Croome, welcomed Mr Harkins? support for marriage equality and agreed that the Senators Bilyk and Polley are out of step with Labor policy.

?While the National Labor conference allowed a conscience vote on this issue, State Labor has a less equivocal position that has been endorsed at several state conferences.?

?The least Senators Bilyk and Polley could do is meet with couples and their families who are affected by marriage discrimination, which they have so far failed to do.?

The Tasmanian State Labor Government became the first in Australia to endorse the principle of marriage equality when it supported a motion calling on the federal parliament to enact the reform in September last year.

At 9am this morning a poll on Union Tasmania website showed 85% support for marriage equality and 9.5% opposition.

Hospitality Begins At Home

?Show?hospitality?to one another without grumbling.? ~1 Peter 4:9 (ESV)

I don?t know about you, but, that scares me. Just the thought of having a group of people (even a small group!) in my home can be overwhelming.

Our culture often equates ?hospitality? with ?entertaining.? ?And, I am not an ?entertainer.?

I have dear friends who are incredibly talented at entertaining. Seriously, they could put Martha Stewart to shame. They have lovely homes, that can comfortably accommodate large, elaborate dinner parties. They know how to put together a ?multi-course, gourmet meal, served at an elegantly set table. And, they appear do it effortlessly.

I have small children, so ?fancy? isn?t a word, or concept, that is often found in our vocabulary. Our home is not large. Oh, it is more than adequate for our little family, but it reaches capacity very quickly! And, while I can get a healthy, relatively tasty meal on the table for my family, it is usually far from gourmet!

Thankfully, for people like me, that isn?t what biblical hospitality is all about.

I am thankful for our little home. It is a blessing from the Lord!? And, it is one that we, as a family,?want to be faithful to use to bless, encourage, and minister to others.

My husband and I have a (long) list of people from our church that we would like to have over to our home. Our goal is to have one family over each month. But, in the year and a half that we have lived here, that hasn?t always happened.

It is so easy for me to get caught up in preparing to have people over ?menus, shopping lists, house cleaning, cooking? But, in the process, I complain about the work (or the people!) involved. I become easily irritated. My husband and children become interruptions and inconveniences, that get in the way of my ?ministry? of hospitality.

Each season of life brings with it a unique set of challenges and limitations.

I am a mom with young children. And, these days, time and energy is at a premium. Caring for my children (and my husband) is my priority. And, that means that, at times, I must limit my involvement in other (good!) activities and ?ministries,? in order to properly focus on and invest in them.

Proverbs 31:27 shows us that a woman of character and integrity ??looks well to the ways of her household? first. No, that does not mean that I am excluded from the biblical mandate to show hospitality. It just means that during this particular season, I need to be discerning and creative?in how I show and practice hospitality.

Although the ministry of hospitality generally applies to those outside of our own home, it must start at home.

The hospitality that we show to others should be an extension of what we are already practicing within our own home and family. Once we have established a pattern of showing hospitality to our own family, only then we can begin effectively reaching out, and extending the ministry of hospitality to others.

Delta closes on deal for Philly-area refinery

(AP) ? A Delta Air Lines subsidiary closed Friday on a deal to purchase a suburban Philadelphia oil refinery and plans to resume fuel production in the fall, a move the airline hopes can cut its jet fuel bill by $300 million a year.

The company closed on the $180 million purchase of the refinery in Trainer and a union official said workers are expected to start returning and getting the plant ready next week.

"Finally, and fortunately, the deal was done," said Denis Stephano, president of the local steelworkers union, who represents about 220 workers at the plant. "We're looking forward to going back to work."

In April, Delta announced plans to buy the idled ConocoPhillips refinery. ConocoPhillips shut down operations at the facility in the fall and threatened to close the facility if a buyer wasn't found by the end of May.

Officials said the refinery is expected to restart in September and that a Delta subsidiary ? Monroe Energy LLC ? will run it. Monroe will start a turnaround at Trainer after the July 4 holiday and plans to resume fuel production in the fall, company officials said in a statement.

"We have a team of refining experts and proven leaders effectively implementing our strategy at the Trainer Refinery," said Jeffrey Warmann, chief executive officer and president of Monroe Energy. "We are eager to start the work before us and humbled by this opportunity to make a difference in this community."

The company has said it expects to have about 400 workers at the plant. Stephano said nearly all of the workers who wanted to return to work at the facility will be able to do so.

Workers will begin returning next week for orientation and training, he said. Over the next 50 to 60 days they will be doing maintenance work and getting ready to resume production.

The closing comes a day after state regulators approved a pipeline transfer that was part of Delta's plans to buy the refinery.

Researchers tune the strain in graphene drumheads to create quantum dots

ScienceDaily (June 21, 2012) ? Tightening or relaxing the tension on a drumhead will change the way the drum sounds. The same goes for drumheads made from graphene, only instead of changing the sound, stretching graphene has a profound effect on the material's electrical properties. Researchers working at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the University of Maryland have shown that subjecting graphene to mechanical strain can mimic the effects of magnetic fields and create a quantum dot, an exotic type of semiconductor with a wide range of potential uses in electronic devices.

The results were reported in the June 22, 2012, issue of Science.

Graphene is a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb lattice. Able to conduct electricity with little resistance at room temperature, graphene is a prime candidate for applications ranging from flexible displays to high-speed transistors.

However, the same lack of electrical resistance that makes graphene attractive for some uses also makes it ill-suited for digital computing applications. Graphene conducts electricity so well because it doesn't have a band gap -- an energetic threshold beneath which the material won't conduct electricity. This means that graphene can't be turned "off," and computers need "on" and "off" signals to transmit and process information.

Because substrates slow the speed of electrons moving through graphene, Nikolai Klimov, a University of Maryland postdoctoral researcher working at NIST, suspended the graphene over shallow holes in a substrate of silicon dioxide -- essentially making a set of graphene drumheads. To measure the graphene's properties, the team used a unique scanning probe microscope designed and built at NIST.

When they began to probe the drumheads, they found that the graphene rose up to meet the tip of the microscope -- a result of the van der Waals force, a weak electrical force that creates attraction between objects that are very close to each other.

"While our instrument was telling us that the graphene was shaped like a bubble clamped at the edges, the simulations run by our colleagues at the University of Maryland showed that we were only detecting the graphene's highest point," says NIST scientist Nikolai Zhitenev. "Their calculations showed that the shape was actually more like the shape you would get if you poked into the surface of an inflated balloon, like a teepee or circus tent."

The researchers discovered that they could tune the strain in the drumhead using the conducting plate upon which the graphene and substrate were mounted to create a countervailing attraction and pull the drumhead down. In this way, they could pull the graphene into or out of the hole below it.

And their measurements showed that changing the degree of strain changed the material's electrical properties.

For instance, the group observed that when they pulled the graphene membrane into the tent-like shape, the region at the apex acted just like a quantum dot, a type of semiconductor in which electrons are confined to a small region of space.

Creating semiconducting regions like quantum dots in graphene by modifying its shape might give scientists the best of both worlds: high speed and the band gap crucial to computing and other applications.

According to Zhitenev, the electrons flow through graphene by following the segments of the hexagons. Stretching the hexagons lowers the energy near the apex of the tent-like shape and causes the electrons to move in closed, clover-shaped orbits -- mimicking nearly exactly how the electrons would move in a vertically varied magnetic field.

"This behavior is really quite remarkable," says Zhitenev. "There is a little bit of electron leakage, but we found that if we complemented the pseudomagnetic field with an actual magnetic field, there was no leakage whatsoever."

"Normally, to make a graphene quantum dot, you would have to cut out a nanosize piece of graphene," says NIST fellow Joseph Stroscio. "Our work shows that you can achieve the same thing with strain-induced pseudomagnetic fields. It's a great result, and a significant step toward developing future graphene-based devices."

The work was a collaborative effort with the University of Maryland, College Park, and the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science.
